Just saw someone dunking a Tarleton ring. Is this a common thing?

Hoping this is not some "part of the A&M system" BS.

It's like the slump buster of ring dunks. Don't begrudge the little ******.

A&M definitely did not invent dunking something earned in beer, then drinking that beer in celebration.

Yeah, you're right.

I am sure Tarleton students had no idea that TAMU students were known for dunking rings in pitchers of light beer and chugging them with family/friends.

Probably just coincidence.

Tarleton used to be the preparatory school for the final two years at A&M when it was John Tarleton Agricultural College (JTAC), so their traditions likely predate you by 80-100 years or so.

So, any proof that Tarleton actually started the ring dunk or just an assumption based on them being a prep school back in the day?

Sorry, I meant predate your concerns, not predate you. Silver Taps has been going on a long time in Stephenville. I wouldn't feel offended; they just had a much closer tie to A&M because of their history than does WTAMU or TAMU-Commerce/insert appropriate city.

Gotcha. I guess my main concern is: 1) did we copy their tradition or 2) did they copy us

Either way, kind of lame and would hope to see the follower be more original.

For example: Auburn wrapping Toomer's Corner = really cool but if we copied it at say the Century Tree, it would be really obvious and Auburn would feel slighted.

Not sure who had the tradition first but here is an interesting bit of history:

" 1961, college officials sponsored a contest for a new athletic nickname to reflect Tarleton's new status as a four-year college. Top three vote-getters were "Texans," "Rockets" and "Packrats." "Texans" was chosen. All the men's athletic teams were referred to as the "Texans", and the women's teams slowly became known as the "TexAnns." Last year, the students agreed to refer to all teams as "Texans." The Texan Rider emerged in the 1970s as the university mascot…"

Now I appreciate Texans, but the contrarian in me would have preferred Packrats.

After reading through their website, they also do:

Thought ring dunking was outlawed in BCS because New Army can't handle their alcohol?

Incorrect. New Army starts on a rolling basis after one's sophomore year.

Not outlawed but TAMU, the school, has recently officially disowned any and all association and affiliation with it.

Liabilities of course.

I say encourage it, as long as they admit their name is " Tarleton" and not Texas A&M someplace

Duck camp is in honor of Oscar P, a duck who followed founder John Tarleton everywhere around campus.

Tarleton was an interesting character who lived a frugal lifestyle and used savings and government bonds to buy land in the Stephenville area. Word has it that an ex-wife sued him in St Louis for part of his estate but he arrived barely in time to counter her charges and retain his money. He would have enjoyed Tanya's frugal mom threads as he perhaps sought to reconstitute pipe tobacco from the cigars he smoked. He was just that kind of guy.

James Earl Rudder was one of those Tarleton alumni who went on to study at A&M.

I work at tarleton, a few rooms down from Coach Gillispie and dunking a ring is definitely new thing. They are very confused on their traditions with regards to A&M stuff. They try to call it howdy week but it doesnt stick, just built a giant ring to take pics near, etc. The one thing they do have is a love/ hate relationship with A&M. Some are super jealous of aggieland, some can't wait to get to aggieland, others graduate and go work in stephenville.

Rudder loved tarleton, he was the center on the football and would come to visit often.

That also included James Earl Rudder himself. Started there and even played football for them.
