I mean, that's what I do when I go camping.

Pretty much what mine is. I added a couple inches of sand to stabilize the rocks better and insulate any tree roots under the pit a little bit from the heat and help it drain rain away better.

I started a fire pit in OP's mother's pants once.

Just be careful when drinking and keep in mind that the firey ring is a burning thing.

That's exactly what I did and it works perfectly. Just don't use rocks that explode.

Rocks need to have government warning lables on them to tell us which ones are dangerous.

This is my firepit. If yours isn't like this it is a pos.

We just recently bought a fire pit ring from amazon and my husband glue edington stone around the outside
It is sitting in a bed of small pebbles/stone
It came out nice

Coming up on the one year anniversary of losing a family friend like this. Got completely hammered, everyone in the family went to bed and he was out messing with the fire. Bent over it a little to try and move a limb he had thrown on it (poorly) and lost his balance after too much booze and fell in. Was burned badly but somehow managed to get back up to the house to wake his wife, she rushed him to hospital and he was later air lifted to burn center where he died 4 days later. He was in his late 60s and had just retired the year before.

Don't get one like mine:

You need to use fire brick and refractory cement for the lining if you use stone/brick. Standard brick and mortar do not hold up to the heat and will crack. Then you're left with pieces of a fire pit.

We went with a Solo Stove for portability.

Neighbor's pit with stones in 12' diameter.

Facebook marketplace has some really good ones at a decent price

more air = less smoke

very little smoke. And most of it is when the fire is just starting. Once it gets rolling, it is awesome!

I Second the solo stove. Very little smoke after the first 15-20 minutes, and it is very hypnotic to watch.

I think i am going to pull the trigger on the bonfire size. its 299 right now and get the base addition for free. Is that a good price or standard from what all of you experience?

talked to a guy that had one at a Jeep get together. he said, the smoke is very low as long as you keep the wood below the top lip. the downside is that it doesn't put out much radiant heat.

I might buy one of these!

I load it up past the lip pretty much every time. Smoke is still very minimal.
