Aftermath of the Houston Rodeo?

I haven't attended many Houston Rodeo events since my two boys were kids. The one aspect that I appreciate the most(but did not do with my boys) was watching all of the kids show their animals and then watch people bid on the animals for purchase. Those funds would help those kids pay for college.

So since the Rodeo folded.....did those kids get shafted? If so, Can one possibly contact a perspective livestock shower and offer money to buy their animal? Heck I rather pay $350 to a kid (yes I know that is about 1/4 value....I would have to go in with 3 other folks potentially) then say HEB to have it butchered. One year my wife went half's on Harvey the show cow and it was a great buy. The meat was of the highest quality.

How much would one offer for a cow, or hog, or goat, or chickens to. Help these kids out? I am willing to spend $600.

Where you buying a cow for $1400? Or is that before paying for processing?

As someone who showed steers, I personally would have kept my steer and had it processed myself over a $600 offer. I dont want to offend you, but that offer would seriously offend these kids, and their parents could just keep the meat or sell half for potentially more than that.

I think he is saying he would go in $600 so $2,400 for the steer, but I don't know what market is on that.

I saw somewhere that there will be some online sales, but what you won't have is the grand champion and the money that comes in with those. Some kids that spent a year or 2 working towards a goal only to have it taken in the panic.

$350 is 1/4 the price

Money wise they are getting the shaft. Whether it be if the make the bidding sale or just go to the 18 wheeler. I don't know the numbers but I would say 90% of these kids don't make the bid sale. They just walk the animals in a circle a couple times and straight to the truck. Those will lose out on regular auction money from the buyer. What the kids miss out on besides $ is the experience of showing. It's a lot of blood sweat and tears to raise show animals. And also rooms for these events are gouged so there that.

Where are you located? It's very kind of you to offer to help a kid! I'd suggest contacting your county extension agent or local ag teacher and he/she can connect you with a kid. If you need help finding an agent or ag teacher, let me know.

In addition to steers, kids showing market barrows (pigs), broilers (chickens), and turkeys also missed showing opportunities. $600 is in the range of what a chicken showman likely spent; turkeys are significantly more. Heifers also did not get shown, but the exhibitor retains the ownership of that animal just like they would have if the show continued.

Kids missed the chance to scramble. If they had caught a calf, they would have earned money to put towards the purchase of a project for next years' show. I think HLSR pays out $500 in scramble certificates. The show has not yet said how they will distribute that money. The top kids in livestock judging also earn scramble certificates, and they didn't get a chance to judge.

$600*4 = $2400.

Call FFA teacher at the school. Coworker had one call him yesterday and he has at least a portion of a hog and a steer now.

The Houston Alternative Steer Show is this Thursday in Abilene. It's called the Grand Finale. Sounds like 800 head expected

There's also one for the barrows I think, but can't remember the details.

400 heifers showed at a barn in the middle of a cow pasture in Bryan last Thursday at BCR Ventures, less than 18 hours after most got pushed out of Houston.

Just graduating seniors

Tons of donations were being announced during the 7 hrs I was there.

I think the kids at this show learned quite a bit about how to get sht done, in spite of poor circumstances.

There are going to be online auctions, but they haven't released details yet on how that will work.

I will spend up $600. I know that is not enough for a steer so I definitely would have to go in with some folks.

How much should a show pig go for?

Maybe I just buy a whole goat, pig or lamb?
I need some guidance on what a fair offer is?

Fair price for the steer (1250 lbs) would be $2000 plus cost of processing, $700-800. That would still be a huge loss for the kids as most show steers cost $2500-$3500 plus upwards of $1200 for feed costs.

My kids would be happy to sell you a high quality show lamb for $400 that would allow you to use $200 for processing. We lost out on both lambs at Austin and now looks like we may lose out on 6 head of sheep and goats at our county show. This is the year that may stall our whole show careers. We do show clean which all can not say. Lambs are between 130-170. The one I would like to eat most of I were to harvest one is about 145 now. If it is hogs which I do not have I could probably help you find some. Do you have a contact email and I will give you some info if you like?

There was a broiler show this past weekend in Wharton County. Over 500 kids showed up to show turkeys or chickens. It was a great effort put together in less than 48 hours! I think I heard it was about 75% of Houston entries. It was also open to RodeoAustin entires too. Will soon be taking donations for those that placed.
