I like to tip competent service well and realize tips are important to those making lower wages and essentially working for tips.

My new barber owns his own shop and works there alone. Since he is the owner should I tip him?

You should give him just the tip.

Based on this; yes.

Otherwise you are tipping only as some form of charity.

I had a owner/barber tell me once that the only reason he was able to keep rates where they were was because so many people tipped well.

So, if you are happy with the haircut, and it's not pushing your budget, go ahead and pay more.

I tip as a supplement to underpaid workers. I'm usually competent and I don't expect to get tips nor could I ethically accept them but I'm well compensated and the owner of my practice.

That makes sense. He's like $7 almost the amount of the tip I have my chain store stylist

Anyone holds sharp objects to my neck, and I intend to let them do it again... I tip em well.

Specially if they got big cans.

I was not aware that American workers are being forced to work in restaurants and that it is 1860 again.

I tend to agree here.

But 1000% yes on the culture of tipping in America.

So if I order a pizza and go pick it up myself, I feel guilty if I don't put something in the tip line. And there are so many other instances where you're not really getting service, just a product, but there is an expectation of a tip. It's just strange how we have decided what is tip worthy and what's not.

When I was in college, I worked at a furniture store and I rarely got tips. Frankly, the Mexican Nationals were the best tippers, but the point is, I probably got a tip 5% of the time. It just wasn't a societal norm.

Tipping has gotten way out of hand. It's not my job to subsidize someone else's employees. If you can't afford to pay them, fire them.

Take food delivery now....service charge, delivery fee, and you want me to tip on top of that? EFF U

The tip jar at Starbuck's is hilarious to me. Massively overpriced product which allows them to have well above average benefits and they still need a tip jar.

It isn't just the tip jar at Starbucks thatbis silly. It is the whole store. If I told you I would make you something at 2,3,4 times the cost you wouldn't just expect it to be better but way better. With Starbucks it had a cult following of hippies and yuppies and next thing you know people are spending their retirement every morning to impress others.

Every year when we watch elf I think of his world greatest cup of coffee and think how funny it would have been had that have been a Starbucks. Not saying it isn't maybe a little better but not the level most idiots try to convince themselves of it. It's cool to show off your ability to afford an overpriced cup of Joe so may as well add to the tip jar as well. What's an $8 cup of joe? Idiots

Could say the same about literally any food or alcohol serving establishment.

Couldn't bring myself to tip the decent looking friendly girl at Smoothie King last week. Just couldn't do it. Annoying places like SK have tip lines on the receipts. Already overpriced as is and the employees are above min wage- not like a restaurant.

The worst are the new iPad payment systems where they flip it around and ask you to tip either 10, 15, 20, or 25% right in front of them. You have to click "other" and then type 0.00% while they're staring at you if you don't want to leave a tip.

And I have no problem clicking 0. Some of you care too much about what others think. People really tip when they are picking up a pizza!

I sometimes tip when picking up a pizza. If it's a high school kid that's happy and polite, I'll leave a big tip regardless of how much work they did. They're just a kid, probably saving up for a date or prom or something. I'm happy to make their night.

If it's a 35 year old burnout behind the register doing a high school kid's job, then that's a no.
