Can a person legally be forced to sell a home?

I know it's a strange question, so let me explain...

Basically, a notorious DFW slumlord owns a previously foreclosed home down the street from mine that has been vacant for years and it's a huge eyesore (come to find out, there's a Facebook page against him and he's been called out multiple times on Channel 8 and several other news outlets. Case in point, he seems like a lousy human being in the first place). I wanted to buy the property from him to fix it up and eliminate the hideousness that it is, so I contacted him. I'll spare the details but unfortunately, he is completely irrational as you can probably tell from the links above. He wants about 3x what the home is worth in retail condition, even after I explained to him that the market won't allow it and it's going to take near $70k in repairs. He refuses to budge or listen.

So I guess that home is going to sit there forever and ever and continue to be an eyesore in the neighborhood. Is there anything that can be done?

Get the city to condemn, they take it through eminent domain.

I've talked to them and they will condemn only if it's a health & safety hazard, which the house is not. All they will do is mow the property and issues mowing liens.

Then you're **** out of luck unless you decide your neighborhood is worth the premium price he's charging.

The solution to your problem can be found on the Outdoor Board. Post this there.

Give the sob a nice new pair of cement shoes and deal with his estate.

Slumlords are worthless pieces of excrement. Slumlords also have a right to tell busybody complainers to eff off.

Why would someone own a house in that area and not rent it, sell it, or live in it? Property taxes are high and appreciation can't be enough to make it worth keeping.

I have a similar house in my neighborhood. The home is in fair shape, the yard is not, pretty much completely overgrown. Guy who owns it is a lawyer. I'd think with the property taxes he would sell it as it isn't occupied and I'm sure has appreciated somewhat in this market despite the appearance.

Also, these two Russian nationals bought a home down the street from me out of foreclosure in 2009 (owner died of cancer and family couldn't keep it up). Totally gutted the place, filled pool with the debris " and then promptly left the country. It took the City of Dallas 22 months to take ownership through imminent domain of a completely abandoned and subsequently trashed home in a pretty nice neighborhood. A home builder bought it from the city and built a very nice home on that lot but it seemed like it took forever. Good luck!

Consider taking the law into your own hands. I would unleash the dogs or the bees or the dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot bees at you.

Oh, or recruit some meth dealers to set up a lab in the house and then call the cops. That'll get 'em real good.

He's in Dallas. I think he wants the problem taken care of in less than four years.

Is he an older fella? If so give him a break - maybe he's having trouble and doesn't have any family help.

Did you bother to read the OP post and the information on all the problems with this guy? He's got plenty of family (Palestinian) terrorist help. And do you understand the house is "vacant for years?"

It would be a shame if the place were to somehow become a health and safety hazard, wouldn't it? Lots of kids around who like to throw rocks at windows over there from what I hear.

Well, then sounds like it needs to become a safety hazard, if you know what I mean.

Sounds like an interesting business model:
1)buy a house
2)let it go to **** and piss off
busy body neighbors
3)extort busy body neighbors to get you to sell.

Good on him.

I'm convinced BeachBabe is a new Bombay sock...

Also, just torch the place. He'll get insurance money and then you or a developer can buy the lot from the insurance company.

If the property is empty.

Stop showing interested, no complaint, don't even speak of it to others for about a year. Then one night slip off and go torch it.

Being a good Samaritan, you should perform routine inspections of the property to ensure that nothing nefarious is going on.

However, one day you are a bit preoccupied as you return from the feed store with a 50lb bag of cat food and decide to do your routine inspection of the vacant place before heading home. When you enter through the back door, you accidentally snag the cat food bag on a nail and it spills all over the floor. You leave the back door open as you head to your place to get a broom to clean up the mess.

When you get to your place, your phone rings and it's a college buddy you haven't heard from in years and you end up talking for quite a while and you end up forgetting about the cat food incident and just go about your day. While all this is going on, nature is already taking course up the street. The local cats, rats, rabbits, and possums are already attracted to the allure of cat food and start taking up residence easily though the open back door. Pretty soon, they are battling it out for territory, building nests, breeding, and generally beginning to tear the place apart.

The next time the City comes to mow, they notice the infestation and damage and start the make it right process.

No, but after my Aunt died, one of my cousins continued to live in the house, even after all of the utilities were cut off. He had a generator, a dorm fridge and a window unit AC to keep him comfortable while he stripped the empty house of anything of value. He removed all of the wiring, most of the fixtures, and even the tanks from the toilets for some reason. He stayed there for a few months until the bank took possession of the property and literally threw him out. My uncle had taken out a home equity loan and moved out when he found out my aunt had cancer, so the mortgage was already at least six months behind by the time she died. (Yes, he was a real piece of crap)

Will the city not take possession of the property if the liens aren't paid? Is he paying his taxes on the property?

Check the tax records and see if he's filing a homestead exemption on it or his other rental properties. Contact the tax office if he is illegally doing so. If he's a slum lord, and a ****ty one, he's cutting corners somewhere. Find that and bust his ***.

Could either help it become condemned, or maybe a group of unhappy neighbors throws in the cash to have the yard serviced so it's less of a wreck to look at.

Break into the house while he's not home. Place a lot of anti US propaganda in one of the rooms along with several bags of fertilizer. Then call in an anonymous tip to the US Counter-terrorism Team.
