Is it weird to retire but keep coming back to the office to visit?

There's a guy here who retired back in the Fall, but keeps coming back to the office multiple times a week to visit everybody. Is that not strange? I thought you were supposed to disappear when you retired.

Maybe he's still hooking up with the receptionist at lunch

not as weird as the dorks who go back to visit their high school teachers. Unless of course you got special attention from said teacher.

Visit once or twice a year, no. once or twice a week, yes. That's weird.

For some people co-workers account for most of their social connections outside home. I worked with a woman who was very outgoing, upbeat, and friendly at the office. After she retired she became pretty lonely because all her friends were at the office.

It is common for our execs to retire and keep an office to have a place to check emails and come in a few hours a day. Half of them still get paid to keep up relationships with old clients and introduce them to people still with the company.

My mom says that when my great-grandfather was retired and really old, he would still hop a bus every day and go Downtown to his old office. The secretary would kindly greet him and help him get back on a bus to go home because he had dementia and forgot he didn't work anymore. Man had an ethic.

Not sure that I'd be doing that but he may be having a problem with all the free time he's got. I've seen plenty of doctors retire or announce retirement...then decide to drop down to 1-2 days a week or retire for 6 months but come back.

I'm sure he'll stop coming in that much in the longer he's retired.

Sounds pretty sad and pathetic.

Sounds like the guy had no hobbies or outside interests.

Definitely weird. When I retire I'm leaving a Beer Baron-shaped hole in my office's wall as I get out of there.

My FIL does this. I keep hoping he'll get over it and let it fall off, but he's still going strong.

Luckily it gives him new cause to relay to me his practiced speech about how the PhDs they keep hiring don't know anything (he was a tech who got his training in the Navy). That one never gets old.

Went at lunch. Totally crushed it.

Actually it was pretty sad, but still did it. Need to get some extra sessions in to make my goal of 100 gym trips in 2019. Currently at 2. -_-

Are their conditions defined in your 100 gym trips?

Does it count if you visit and say purchase a healthy smoothy as a meal replacement and then leave?

What about going to just drop some kids off at the pool?

And congrats on the 2.

We had one of these guys where I worked. He retired at about age 75. Hard working fellow and well liked.

I think got really bored at home so he kept coming back to the office. He would hang out for hours floating between various offices talking to former co-workers. His wife would call us looking for him. One of our higher ups finally had to tell people to encourage him to leave because he was distracting employees from getting their work done.

Multiple times a week is odd, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Every once in a while sure.
