Here's my breakdown.

Family - hug
Friends - side hug
Coworker - usually zero physical contact...at most a handshake if required
Acquaintance - handshake
Friend of a friend - handshake
Stranger - no physical contact

10-15 years ago...it would've been hugs for everyone...now I'm just trying to stay out of trouble

I'm not a fan of hugging people, even if they're family as a way of saying hello. I shockingly don't like physical contact as a way of greeting.

When I hug a person, it's tight and meaningful rather than some side ass-out hug.

Hug immediate family if anything. Dad usually handshake. Other family it depends on what they offer upon approach

People I know or am meetinging it will be a handshake, or a wave hi if at a distance or not offered a hand.

I have had a very few female co-workers (usually older grandma types) that have offered a hug and I reciprocate but it is awkward to me. I usually limit any contact with another person to a businesslike handshake.

We Indians don't hug opp sex people in general. Just close family members.

Some years ago I was looking for a new job in a company where a female white ex-classmate was working. She said let's meet at Starbucks to discuss. So I went there, we saw each other after about 3-4 years and she raised her arms to hug and I did as well in a side hug. I am generally not very comfortable doing this.

Then another white female ex-coworker with whom I got along well with. Attractive one too. Same thing, chanced upon her on the street and she hugged me. I don't quite know what to do very well so I hope I did the hug the right way.
