Help a stranger out, give them some cash, fix a flat tire for a little old lady, buy someone who needs it dinner etc...

Does it take away from the deed in the grand scheme of things if you tell someone else about it?

Yes. A true good deed is done selflessly.

Some maybe. But at least a good deed got done. The recipient isn't aware and likely doesn't care the giver went and told others about it.

you mean, like posting on TexAgs about it?
yes

I don't understand the question; are you supposed to keep it a secret in your little box of good thoughts?

If I helped someone change a tire on a side of a road, it might come up in conversation later. Does that make me a bad person? Should I worry about how Santa or some imaginary judge is recording it in his ledger?

This is essentially my question. Expanding it beyond Santa and into reality.

Backstory: Tonight I went to a restaurant by my myself to eat. I noticed two WWII vets eating at a table next to me, I could tell by their hats. One had his back to me. I paid for their dinner, and before I left I went over to thank them for their service. As it turns out, the guy with his back to me is a man I know pretty well from the American Legion. I had no idea it was someone I knew. I shared this little story with my daughter, and ex.

Um, IF I were going to to do something like that, I might have left without making a show of thanking them for their service. But that's just me.

As far as telling your ex, you should always be careful what you tell her. You can afford to buy dinner for strangers, huh?

Sounds like you'll be buying a few more dinners per month for both your ex and her slam piece

If you list your name on a GoFundMe donation, you're a terrible ******bag.

If you really want to piss me off, post about your wonderful deed on social media or ask me if I want to "pay it forward" while at the cashier

I haven't asked anything from anybody, other than their opinion.

it was a nice thing to do but telling others about means you're looking for recognition and praise for doing something good

I never donate to GoFundMe campaigns, but I also never tell people when I do.

The only time its okay to tell someone else is when the sole reason is to help you get laid. And in this case, its okay to exaggerate a little as well.

Who cares?

You could be a standard GB poster, and just make a point of always telling anyone who will listen that you never do anything to help anyone for free because you're so hard and edgy.

Tough question. I'll let you know how it goes if I ever do a good deed.

There is no such thing as a selfless good deed. There are altruistic good deeds and well intentioned deeds but everything you do, even with good intentions serves some sort of selfish purpose.

You can get the hats for 10 or 15 bucks on ebay.
I've got one of these I wear sometimes to Denny's or IHOP.

Yes, hats are cheap, and I guess I give my bull**** detector too much credit. I did my time, but I guess I overestimate my ability to spot it. Usually I don't question an old crusty guy.

This. The moment you take a selfie whIle engaged in this "selfless" act, it ceases to be an act of goodwill.

Well ****nuts folks. Can we steer this thread away from the veterans stuff and back onto the original subject? Are good deeds in-fact good deeds if you tell someone else?

Will some higher-power deduct points from your scorecard?
BaitShack
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think that higher power would have known your intention at the moment you made that decision.
BostonAg74
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Serious answer: It's all about the context. If you tell people about it as a means for some level of validation or recognition, it diminishes the deed itself. If you tell your children about it as a life lesson, perhaps in hopes that they will choose to do something selfless as a result, then it gives even more meaning to the deed.

Telling people in an effort to seek recognition = BAD
Telling people to inspire them to perform similar acts = GOOD.

After I do the deed I score the effort and log it in my deed journal.

You know why you did it, you don't need anyone else to "approve."
