I've been here sing Bonfire fell, and I think it was around a year or so before that.

It started when GoBig12 and Austin360 turned into a orange tinted Aggie bashing board.

I believe it really got off the ground in '97 and it only had four forums.

Actually at one time there was only one forum. When general first was created no one ever posted here.

I found it in early 98 and it had been around a while then. Peter started it. He could give a better history.

I'm pretty sure TexAgs first appeared in 1996. Before that, I spent most of my time on the SWC message board on AOL and the original Aggielist listserv. A few other TexAgs old-timers started out on the AOL boards, too. Seems like ancient history now.

It did not really take off until 10/23/1999...

That was the first day my wisdom visited this board...

So we're going with 1996?

Any Mods that have anything diff. to say, or are we gonna go on that?

Thx. to all that responded.

Not 1996.

The domain was registered on 22-Jul-98, so I guess that's about as close to an official start date as you're gonna get.

Verse 1:
In a little bar in Aggieland way back in '61
A man was flyin' burgers; gee, it seemed like lots of fun
But to his friend the bun boy, he confessed his misery
"I think I'd like to start a group, so come along with me."

CHORUS:
And all you Aggies across the na-ation
Please visit Texags for your Aggie News

Verse 2:
The web site soon started boomin'; they were rakin' in the coins
They found a few Good Ags and persuaded them to join
And the secret staff decided, since they had such new-found fame
"We need a fancy title," and the TexAgs they became

(chorus)

Verse 3:
They soon packed up for a new ISP to reap their fortunes there
The streets aren't really paved with gold and you can't live on air
And then an Ag approached them, said "I know a thing or two:
I'll put you on a TV show and make big stars of you."

(chorus)

Verse 4:
Now things are goin' groovy and we really can't complain
Though the pace of web site trollin' nearly drives us all insane
And everybody's pushin', sayin' "Give it all you can!"
I've come to think of it, our business manager's our biggest fan
Sing to the tune of The Legend of Paul Revere by Paul Revere and the Raiders.

This site started around May of 1998.

I was living in Tennessee at the time and couldn't really get a whole lot of Aggie information other than surfing the Net. I used to go to the GoBig12 site and read all the posts and I would surf all the major news sites for any tidbit of Aggie info. All I read about in the local papers were the UT Vols.

When I heard that GoBig12 was going to shut down all their forums except the sip board...I wanted to create a place that Aggies could go to.

So I grabbed a "HTML for Dummies" book and put together "the ultimate aggie fan site" that resided on Geocities for about 2 months, before I realized I gave the site a lame title.

I was driving around TN in a truck with the license plate "TEX AGS" (still have the tags btw, but I'm in TX now). So I decided to name the site TexAgs.Com. I didnt' want to violate any copyrights by using "Aggie" or "Texas A&M" etc...

So in Jul of 1998 the site was relaunched as TexAgs.Com.

The traffic on the site was doubling every month for about a year or so. The growth was quite unexpected.

As I stated earlier, I used to surf the net for any tidbit of Aggie info...so I decided if I'm going to surf anyway...might as well save my fellow Aggies sometime by putting together a front page with links to all the stories I found each morning.

It was tough going for a while...all the expenses were out of pocket since the site was so small..there was no way anyone would want to advertise on it. So people sent in donations to keep the site running (all the donations I might add has been refunded with a 50% return once the advertisers showed up!).

I could probably type for hours on the History of TexAgs..but I'm sure everyone reading this would like to get back to work right?

I'm sure TexAgs has been responsible for reducing Aggie productivity in the workplace for some years now.

I'm not sure but I think it was the Clinton/Monica thing that really kicked off the general board. It sat totally empty for awhile.

I still have my "TexAgs: Where hardcore ags roam" t-shirt.

I'm just curious how much $$$ you make on it now? Not an exact figure, but is it enough so that Texags is your primary job? Or is it just a second income?

Edit: The reason I ask is because I have some ideas for a couple websites and I'm wondering if I should just expect to have a second income with them or if a web community can make enough to be the main income. (None of my ideas would be competitive to TexAgs)

Tralfaz,

The advertisers have come and gone...although you still see some ads on this site..it is nothing like it used to be..meaning there was a time when the ad money was good.

I'm not as involved with the site as I used to be..but I'm quite sure that TexAgs is now possibly breaking even. Or at least I haven't seen a check!

Brandon and some great volunteers run the site now (I got really burned out from trying to please everyone...it got impossible)..and I can tell you that TexAgs has come full circle....meaning it is now back to a "Labor of Love" not a money making venture.

No one is making any money on this site now as far as I know. That's why you start seeing all the sites with premium content...its a matter of staying afloat...not a second income anymore.

Why not go back and look at the archives?
It's slow and breaks down, but you can get a general idea of things. Enjoy.
