Is an MBA a real graduate degree?

For many years, I thought no. I know my company, which gives a salary grade bump for completing a master's degree, does not recognize an MBA as a graduate degree.

But I ran into a real buzz saw with a relative who recently completed an MBA through Lamar and then mentioned afterwards he had the same level of education as me.

Seeing as I have a real MS in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech, I just laughed, which royally pissed off his wife. When she demanded to know why I was laughing I explained to her an MBA from Lamar was just a graduate certification, not a real degree. They were not amused.

What say TexAgs? I won't change my mind but was I retested to see if I was off the beaten path here.

Depends where. Vast majority, likely not worth it if you are in it for the economic gain.

Get in a top school, different story.

This. It's definitely a degree, but for many it's just a bachelor in a business emphasis since they came from a different field.

its definitely more valuable/real then an mfa. I would laugh more at Lamar than the MBA, but I don't do that as I know I have a big dick and don't need to put others down.

Oh, I agree. But he caught me off guard and it just came out spontaneously.

I find it very difficult to believe that your company doesn't recognize an MBA as a graduate degree.

OP has a worthless mechanical degree from a second rate public tech school. No way he should be talking **** about anyone else's creds.

Nope, sure don't.

Maybe that's why he works at a ****ty company.

I too have a masters degree in engineering. I most certainly consider an MBA to be a "real" masters. Then again, I may be bias as I am strongly considering pursuing my MBA.

All that said, I fully expect an MBA to be a joke compared to undergrad, much less graduate, engineering

An MBA is obviously a graduate degree.

An MBA from Lamar is for those people who tried to get an MBA from Phoenix University, but don't have the restraint to be on a computer without looking at porn.

As long as it's from an actual college vs online or glorified HS. A real MBA requires around 50% more hours of coursework than your MS likely did.

It's so adorable when engineers pretend they are better than others at everything.

The CEO of Concho resources and member of the A&M board of regents got his MBA from UT Permian Basin. Guess it worked out for him. At the engineering firm I'm at a PE cannot progress to a director position without an MBA, regardless of where it's from. A lot of them went the online route through state directional schools.

Most important... was his wife hot?

If so, post pics. If not, then you are good.

Strictly speaking, it is a graduate degree. Whether it's considered as prestigious as other graduate or professional degrees is another story. Still better than someone with a J.D. wanting to be called Doctor.

I'm good.

And very few of our management has MBAs. Well, actually none that I know of. But most have advanced engineering degrees, either MS or PhD

OK, on a serious note:

I have a Masters in Engg from Texas A&M. Obviously that is valuable. Then I have an MBA from a top ranked B school. That is valuable too, but not by itself. You have to have other skills underneath it. If you have that, then having an MBA makes you look good.

My MBA has taught me to think about business aspects rather than just developing product. I think about several issues now that I did not earlier.

So yes, it is useful and is a masters degree.

I COULD see where if you worked at an engineering firm that an MBA against an MS in "Fancy calculations using the manufacturer's load-bearing reference guide" both competing for a promotion, that the MBA would seem rather useless in helping the firm actually create the structures they are paid to create.

Our engineering firm wants directors to have MBA's rather than MS in engineering because a large part of that job is the finances, accounting, personnel management, and general business skill behind engineering. There's talk of making it a requirement for project managers as well.

My wife has hers masters in educational administration from lamar's online crap. She knows it isn't as prestigious as a real school. This why she wants to get her doctorate from a more legitimate institution.

You're right, just know it on the inside since it's family.

MBA... Master of Business Administration... Sure sounds like a graduate degree to me...

But laughing about it being from Lamar is understandable.

IMO, yes. It's to the point where not having one puts you at a disadvantage, even if it's just from a "check the box" program. At least for younger professionals.

Exactly. Thus, why lower tier schools are now offering MBA programs. If you are doing it to check the box then of course go easier route. If you want to be CEO of a 25B+ company. Look to the Harvards, Duke, etc. assuming you can get in.

My company has gone from "bachelor's degree required" to "master's degree preferred". People already at the company are getting their MBA, and aren't moving up at near the speed they thought they would.

Glad I got my master's when I was young.
