Have 15 spots and 18 kids going for them. Last year, my first, my numbers weren't as high and I got to keep everyone. This year I'm not as fortunate. Two of them I don't have much of a problem with but one works harder than everyone else, is a really good kid, and was one of the first I formed a relationship with. It's going to be really tough and I hate that I have to do it.

Any ideas on things to say/not say? Both serious and funny responses welcome.

Can you make the hard-worker an equipment manager? Maybe he could practice with the team and improve his skills.

I'm going to offer it, but not sure they will take it. Basketball is they're "life" as they say. Had "ball is life" embroidered on their backpack.

Get one of the other teachers to fail a kid so when that spot opens up the manager can suit up

Keep him on as a "practice squad" member.

Well, you could relay that a single season doesn't make a "life". You could assert that there's a lot to learn from practicing with the team and studying/watching actual games, especially if you can fill them in on game-time strategies. Also, maybe you could refer to it as coach's assistant, rather than equipment manager.

Maybe you could mention Travis Labhart who practiced with the Aggie women's BB team and that practice aided him for football.

I would cut someone personally, and have done it, that while they may be a better performer or athlete, their grades make them likely to leave me short.

Have the bottom 4 play a game of horse and winner stays on the team

Just go ahead and cut him. Explain to him that production is more important than hard work.

Or cut one of the better players in favor of him and explain to that guy that schmoozing gets you ahead in life.

Either way, a kid learns an important life lesson and you get off guilt free as you were the one that taught said lesson.

Keep one or two as team managers. Usually someone gets hurt, has grade issues, moves during the year. One year, kept young man as manager -8th grade- moved him on roster during year when another player moved during season. He grew a 11 inches in next four years. He ended up playing college basketball on scholarship. He had a twin brother I kept, he grew 1inch in next 4 years and became a chef. True story, you never know.

The obvious answer is the kids with the 15 hottest mom's make the team. Or are you one our resident gays? Take a look at the "is this mom too much" thread and let me know if you think she's gross or instaboner.

Take it one step further. Bang the moms of the bottom four kids. The one with the best mom gets to stay on the team.

I would also include a scale for blowjobability but then again, I don't just hire the first secretary that comes through the door.

Have you looked at grades ( no pass no play), days in ISS/detention? I would always take 18 if I had 15 spots because there are always kids that become I eigible.

Just tell the kid he is better than the other players but to be fair you have to keep the other players because you are a democrat. Might as well start em early.

I would keep the hard working kid and find another to cut. In the long run he will be good for the locker room and team. Let's be honest, if it's the 15th person on your roster you can afford to cut someone who might have a little more skill but doesn't have the heart or work as hard.

Be sure the moms know it's a competition.

WTH?. You can tell him he's a winner but he's so special he's needed on the bench to be an inspiration. Meanwhile, "Fight Song " plays in the background. Y'all can finish your moment quietly singing together and maybe shed a couple of tears. Or you can man up and tell him he's cut. It's ok, life is going to take much bigger dumps on him later on, so let him learn to handle it now. I guess the course of action depends on whether you identify as male, female, or ze.
The Shank Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I very much identify as a male, have a Fiance so negative on the mom idea, and when you're the only father figure a kid has its rough to think about abandoning them

Still a few weeks out from official practice, so there is some time. Are you not getting any from volleyball, or are those already included into the 18? What about having an additional team, find a few games for them here and there, and then when you lose players to grades, injuries, quitting...you still have plenty of girls? Any chance one or two get bumped up to JV/Varsity?

Good luck this season.
The Shank Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Promoted to JV this year, and volleyball incoming are all fish. One freshman may get bumped up to JV if my top player gets bumped to varsity. The three cuts are all juniors. Hard to make varsity in 6A if you don't figure into JV as a junior

Thanks for the well wishes.

No joke. I'd rather be cut than be players 10-15.

I'll more than likely have a 8-10 player rotation but we carry as many as we have jerseys. We're a school of 2800. The extras are the fill ins if grades or injuries become a factor. Last year had one of the spares average double figures after losing a few posts to both
