I encounter the Campisi family one a month or so.

My paternal grandfather grew up in Palermo, Sicily. When he was around 16 both his parents were murdered by the "Black Hand" for failure to pay protection. He emigrated to the US worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines until he saved enough money and opened his own business.

Because of that tragedy, when he moved to America, learned English and refused to speak Italian for the rest of his life.

when i was in high school we had a foreign exchange student from palermo that i played soccer with. We got drunk together one night and he told me all sorts of stories. Mob is still pretty heavy in sicily.

to answer tour question, basically yes, his family was connected, One thing i remember him telling me was the whole olive oil business is a scam. Like very little of that **** is authentic.

really funny when the cops busted our party and he was freaking out cause he thought he was going to get deported.

The olive oil thing is true. There's a Texas Hill Country Olive Co. Or something like that in Dripping Springs where you can order olive oil. Probably one of your better options to get the real stuff.

Bryan Texas had a organized ring in the 60s according to my Dad. My Dad went to A&M and worked as an embalmer at a funeral home to pay his tuition.

He said the Scarmados who had a grocery store would "pay out" for favors all over the Brazos Valley with the farmers to supply their store.

He said that one of the Scarmados passed away while he worked at the funeral home. He picked up the body and was given 500 dollars by a family member to take extra care of the deceased. All for himself. After the funeral another family member told him to go to the peaches in the grocery store and look under them. He did and there was 1000 dollars more for him. He said that he never questioned them because he was afraid that he may end up in a pit somewhere.

That was 1963 so who knows if it still goes on.

I used to represent a hardware manufacturer from Italy. The Owner was Italian, and it was known that he was being protected by the Mafia. He invited the entire US sales team out for a visit and sales meeting.

His home had a indoor swimming pool in the lower level. He had a "garden" full of nice modern art that was about 2 acres.

His estate was guarded by machine gun wielding thugs(reminded me of the flashback scenes from The Godfather movies).

I wish I had something to add, but I had the time of my life out there. Lake Como is the most beautiful place I've ever been to.

Can't wait to go back.

Knew a couple of the Scarmardo families while growing up, and went to a few school dances with one. Thankfully, I never got on their bad side.

First wife was part of that family.

They are still a pretty well known family in BCS.

The mob is heavy into nursing homes and rehad centers in the northeast. Part of one of my first jobs was trying to collect money from them for past due bills. Had some interesting phone calls to say the least.

I met a Scarmado out in snook who was a farmer while working out there. Nice man. No issues with him.

Ha. Never even caught that what I wrote. Maybe that was my Dad who is now deceased joke on me from beyond

When I signed up for the Maroon and White report many years ago, I talked to his mother on the phone. She was really sweet and nice. A very proud mother just helping her son. Exactly the type of person you would expect to be in the Mob. I knew at that moment to make sure I used a credit card that would not have any problems because I didn't want any problems.

There was a Scamardo girl from Bryan in my Fish Camp DG back in the day. Really makes you think.
