A third party candidate on the conservative side could actually be a positive for the Republicans. If they concede that Trump is going to lose anyway, there would be no harm in amping up the conservative voter turnout with a charismatic third party candidate to help the Republicans in the down ballot races. Sure, Trump would get slaughtered in the electoral college, but losing badly has the same net result as just losing, so why not?
