Blue pens are the devil. It's been 10 years since I got out, and I still have trouble picking up a blue pen.

Or was that just a Marine thing?

Allow me to answer for AggieDad, "YES" --

I didn't know it was a military thing, I just knew that he is very particular about what kind of pen he uses. I thought that it was actually genetic, because Sea hAg seems to have been blighted by this disease. Everytime we go to Target or Walmart, etc. she hunts for some particular pen that she is no longer able to buy anywhere. Me - I like colored ink, Pink, Purple, Blue and Green!

Yes, unless absolutely forced by necessity.

I was raised in a military house and black has always been the only option. Unless your a 12 year old girl writting little hearts and things on your note books.

I think the primary reason (at least for the last 40 yrs) for using black ink is that blue does not always copy well.

Do you still write the date as 28 OCT 03?

Though I don't think Blue ink is the spawn of Satan, like some others, I still use black mostly. I most often edit in red, though.

For the most part, I have successfully switched DTGs to the civilian method, but can still throw out the Army way, as needed.

Hehe. I have become so fond of using black pens that I am unable to process someone wanting me to use another color of ink. A couple of weeks ago, I had to sign some papers and I pulled out my black pen (you still keep one on you at all times, too, don't you? ) and they said...oh, no, you have to use a different color of ink so that you can tell it was signed and not computer generated...

blech...

Not only do I only use black pens, I have to get the clicky kind so I can hook it inside my BDUs when I'm not using...

So, those gov. issue pens work out nice. Great pens. I wish I had my own stash.

Speaking for myself, thankyou, black is just a habit borne from the use of military issue pens, and what always seemed to be available in the office supply cabinet at work.
I do have a definite preference for roller-ball type pens though, as they are smoother writing.
However, the Naval unit I retired from had all us senior folks use a differant colored pen for editing messages and other document drafts. That way we could all see who was suggesting what changes as the document made the rounds.

Not military and thus my answer is different. I only like blue pens. Hate black pens. If I had two pens, it would be black and red. But I like blue. I copies very well and it is much easier to see your revisions and edits on paper. I know edits should be in red, but if you don't have a red pen, blue works great and thus you only need one pen. Blue.

For everyday purposes, I guess I use black more often than not, but when I'm signing a letter or transmittal or something, I like to sign in blue, that way I know its an original and can distiguish it from copies.

wow, i didnt know this was a military thing.

i have always strongly preferred a black pen, dont know why - i have no military background.

its kind of funny, my dad always prefers blue pens, so you would think as a child i would have also.

i am definitely funny about the pens i use.

oh well, to each his own.

BLUE all the way. I always saw the black-pen thing as just another example of soul-killing bureaucratic rigidness. Once I got out of the Navy, I left my black-pen days behind me. It copies well and it's easy to differentiate an original from a copy.

I used to maintain the 28OCT03 date style, but that's fallen by the wayside. Oh well.

Black at hospitals because it copies better. ICU flow sheets were sectioned off in colors.Blue for days, green for evenings and red for nights but black ink only.We did use colored markers for some things but not official charting and orders.

Black is pretty much standard in medicine as I think someone else mentioned.
