I'm in Tamworth, New South Wales this weekend and at dinner tonight, I noticed several men wearing cowboy boots with spurs. One of the guys had his 10-12 year old son with him and the son was not wearing spurs. So, that led my 17 y/o daughter to ask a very good question.

When can a boy (or girl I suppose), start wearing spurs?

Is there an event like a Quincaenera or a Bar Mitzvah where a young cowboy gets his spurs?

I understand you have to win the belt buckle but I have no idea what qualifies one to wear spurs. Thanks in advance.

No spurs on Club Street here in Singapore at the moment. I'll report back if that changes but it's highly unlikely.

Gold spurs- complete a combat deployment with a cavalry unit.

Silver spurs- complete a spur ride "demonstrating tactical and technical competency in cavalry related tasks".

That's about it.

If you are an actual cowboy who just came into the local minimart or cafe to grab a quick bite, then it's ok.

So let me ask a different way. Is there an age when it is appropriate for young cowboys to start wearing spurs?

It's not a matter of age. It's a matter of the individual wearing the spurs 1) knowing how to properly use them and 2) having a horse that knows how to respond to them.

Some people where them to seem like cowboy, but must cowboys think these people are dumbasses.

I was always impressed by the dudes who would show up to drink at the Chicken in the mornings dressed up in Old West photo booth gear. Beat up hats, long hair, scarf around the neck, jeans tucked into boots, and spurs jangling. Something tells me they weren't real working cowboys. Especially since most of the real working guys in the area didn't roll into the bars until Friday nights to get tore up.

Funny....was in a restaurant this evening and saw a "cowboy" coming out of the restroom with his spurs on.

Later on the way home my 8 year old son asked if he could get a set of spurs. Had to tell him "son, you don't own a horse. You have no need for a set of spurs." Hahahaha

Strange to see that in Australia. Been to the outback in Queensland many times and only see RM Williams.

Aussies are mighty impressed with my Texas cowboy boots though.

I'm no expert by any means but that was my assumption about spur wearing etiquette.

I will say that there were plenty of real cowboys in Tamworth. And this month, they've got the Music Festival and a big rodeo so there's likely to be plenty more. The folks I spoke with were impressed that I was an American and had made it that far into rural Australia on my own. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to bring my cowboy boots with me. Maybe next time. Although, they were sorely lacking in SPJST halls in the area.

It is fairly common in a rural area I frequent. Ranch crews stop in for lunch wearing spurs and covered in mud, cow crap, etc. Trucks, trailers and horses are outside - just another day at work.

Spur sales will probably increase with the new pistol on a holster law.
