I'm trying to decide between and economical JBL and H/K system.

Anyone had any experience with these brands? Positive or negative?

HK and JBL are the same company - Harman. Not sure which is better - I would suggest trusting your ear.

That must be why I like them the most!

Bose is nice, but very overpriced and I need something a little more economical. Thanks though.

As others have said theyre pretty much the same thing. Link me to some specific systems and I would be able to better help you.

If you go to ANY audiophile web site or forum and ask them about good speakers you will NEVER hear them say get bose. Audiophiles have an extreme dislike for bose because the product they sell is way overpriced for the quality of materials used and sound produced. If you are looking for some good information, search for an audiophile forum and post there. They should be able to help you with finding a good set of speakers for a good price (and can make suggestions if you tell them your budget).

Panasonic has a pretty good home theatre set with 4 stand speakers (60) a center channel (220) and a sub, with a progressive scan DVD/reciever for like $450 or something.

bose is *decent* for movies and classical music, but otherwise, it's crap

My concerns with Bose stem from the fact that my fiancee will also use this setup for music and I'm not confident their 2" speakers will handle the mid-range HZ.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

my experience with with any package deal is that you can't get near the sound you can from buying the components seperate. I would find the deal with the most versatile receiver so in the future it won't goto a waste if you want to upgrade your setup.

I've got some JBL studio speakers. Very suprising volume handling for their size... but a little lacking in the mid range. If you want to save a little $$$, College Station Pawn always seems to have nice high-end stuff.

BTW- I found a HUGE stockpile of TVs at a music/electronic repair store in Seguin (that's where we're getting our music stands). The owner says he's sold big screens for as little as $200. Some of it looks pretty nice.

My husband has never gone with just brand but puts together the best components he can afford, at the time, and then slowly upgrades and hands down to the kids.He did choose Bose about five years ago because he got a steal deal at Sam's. THe FTAB turned up sounds like they are marching right beside you!

Bose is for people who want pretty good sound without filling their house with stylish giant black speakers.

You can find small speakers that sound MUCH better than bose for less money with the same or better quality. bose are for people that don't do any research on speakers (I was one of those people until a few months ago).

What I'm thinking of is

Harmon/Onkyo Receiver ($300)
2 pair of 4" JBL surround speakers ($99/pair)
JBL center channel for $125

I'll hook up a sub later.

Schwin,

Research on speakers??? What does this mean? What sounds good to you may sound different to me. You are saying the same things word for word that every other bosebasher out there puts out at any opportunity. Are you simply parroting what you've heard other people say?

The truth is, people have different tastes. Not all people hear things the same, nor do they find the same sounds attractive. The people who really know their stuff will say that quality is determined by what the buyer finds attractive.

Tenn - it's a well known fact that Bose puts more money into marketing than R&D. They are WAY overpriced and you can find a much better quality set up in the same price range if not less.

True.. Bose is way over-rated..

Tenn-

True that what sounds good to me may not for you, but what I was trying to say is that if bose sounds good to you, then you can find a comparable setup for much less money. As MCM said... way overpriced.

Bose sucks. They market to the masses and people assume because they are high-priced then they are good. They are decent if you want speakers that are virtually invisible, but otherwise, don't waste your money.

MM, if you're on a budget I HIGHLY recommend the Onkyo home theater 6-speaker system and then buy a separate receiver of your choice. You can find the speaker system at Fry's for like $179. Great deal and even better sound. They are really Polk Audio speakers, just sold as Onkyo. They used to be on Circuit City's website with tons of customer reviews. I decided to give it a try since everyone on CC's site and on hometheaterspot.com all had good things to say about it... and I am not diappointed in the least. I spent $199 on the speakers and $300 on my receiver and have awesome sound in my large gameroom.

I think it's model HT-S650 and is last years model so probably is discontinued. They had tons of them at Fry's a couple of months ago.
