I had the grey Motorola DVR with U-Verse for maybe two years. The problem they wouldn't disclose is once that particular model of DVR reaches about 80% capacity, it craps out and needs to be reboot or at worse case (mine) replaced. After taking about a week to diagnose the problem, AT&T had a technician come out and replace the DVR with a newer (black) model. Have only had one instance in the past two years where I've had to reboot, but that was caused by a power surge.
