Pit crew guys are definitely athletes. I was on pit road the last race at Texas and talked to a few. Most come from college athletics. Tire guys were typically football players. Takes some strength to throw around this 80 pound tire/wheels like they're toys.

Athletic, in most cases. Athlete, no. If you consider a NASCAR driver to be an athlete, you would also have to include airline pilots, truckers, construction workers operating heavy machinery, etc. which involve skill behind the operation of a machine. I consider NASCAR drivers to be usually athletic entertainers, but certainly not athletes as they are not competing in a sport which involves purely physical prowess/aptitude.

The physical toll placed on a body, and the endurance needed to do it for 3-4 hours is so undervalued and underestimated by most people. I would hesitate to label the drivers as elite athletes like other pro sports, but they are, for the most part, in tremendous physical shape and the mental focus and physical endurance needed to compete on the edge as they do week in and week out and very impressive.

They aren't driving down the highway for 4 hours. They are pulling 4-5 G's and sustaining it for 10-20 seconds in the turns and doing two turns every minute.

Many of them appear to be very fit. But then there are guys like Tony Stewart who look like absolute slobs. Not saying he doesn't possess some athleticism, but it would be ridiculous to say guys like him are in any way elite athletes when compared to other professional sports.

I would consider them to be more athlete than golfers are. Plus they have to consider / react to the actions of others
