Big DB fan but hated the McDonald version. Saw them this summer opening for Boston (who was amazing). Doobies still rockin' and having a good time playing hits from 40 years ago.
Late summer '72 saw them in Dallas opening for T-Rex. They played a great one hour set before T-Rex took the stage. In between songs all you could here was "Doobie Brothers, Doobie Brothers". Four songs into their playlist T-Rex frontman got pissed and the band left the stage. DB came back out and played another hour or so. McDonald and his "taking it to the street" BS sucks nuts.
I was at that show. The only other time I saw a headline act booed off the stage was when UFO opened for Cheap Trick at Randy's Rodeo. Cheap Trick did their stuff, throwing guitar picks into the crowd. Crowd got restless, started yelling for Michale Schenker. UFO came back out and played Lights Out London for half an hour, until the cops came in and shut it down.
Taking it to the streets sucks. He was a late addition to the band, and because of his ego, he broke the band.
The original band was exactly that...a band. No egos, could play the sh*t out of music. After Michael McMumbles, it was all downhill. They sold out, made money, got radio airplay.
Much like Metallica after the S&M album for example.
First saw the Doobies in 73 (I think. That was a hazy period) in Salt Lake City They were the opening act for Three Dog Night. We thought they were introduced as the B00bie Brothers as nobody had ever heard of them. A week later Listen To The Music hit the airwaves.
