I feel bad for Perry. I know he reads texags and the mean stuff people say about him here can't make him feel good.

quote:fwiw, I have no dislike for Governor Perry, nor do I think naming (or even renaming) a building after him is necessarily a bad idea. I just don't think renaming the Academic Building after him is a good idea.
I feel bad for Perry. I know he reads texags and the mean stuff people say about him here can't make him feel good.

If it's cancelled because Gov. Perry actually declined the honor, lots of people will need to re-evaluate their opinion of him.
quote:
In a speech that Perry is delivering tonight, the governor's prepared text states, "Upon deep reflection, I have informed the board of
regents of my decision to politely decline this great honor.
"I do so because certain places on this campus, like our most sacred traditions, transcend any one individual.
"They are bigger than any one of us and represent our shared heritage. And I want to keep it that way.
"I want the Academic Building to be called the Academic Building in 2114, long after we are all gone."

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that had the exact same thought. I don't know if you should be insulted that we have liked minds.
quote:Yeah, I highly doubt he suddenly had an attack of humility.
If he "declined" the honor it will have been because he saw the ****storm of opposition that erupted when people found out about it, and realized he was going to suffer massive public backlash if it went through.

Perry, who earlier in the week said through a spokesperson that he'd be honored to have the iconic building with his name on it, is expected to decline the proposal outlined in an agenda

Per the linked article, he did decline:

Whether he did so just because of the backlash or because he realized it was a bad idea is another issue.

This sounds like the type of man I could envision being President of the University.
quote:Something tells me that if there hadn't been a backlash, or if the backlash had been smaller, Perry would be polishing up the new signs and lettering as we speak.
