How long do you want to ignore this user?

Tenative plans are to fly into London on Nov 19th, take Ryanair over to Dublin and spend a day or two, drive across the island to Kerry and catch a Ryanair flight to Frankfurt, then hit Munich and maybe ski in Austria, and fly out of Munich on Dec 1.

Anyone have suggestions for things to do or see in the follwing areas?:
  • Dublin
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Frankfurt
  • Munich
  • Bavaria
  • Austria

We will have a group of four so we will be renting a car since it will be cheaper than buying railpasses for everyone.

Right now the IAH-LGW, MUC-IAH flights on Continental are running around $500. Seems fairly cheap for an open-jaw itinerary. But, we'll probably wait to see if we can grab it for a little less once the fall fares go into full swing. Anyone have advice on buying tickets to Europe in the fall? Our two inter-europe flights will be on Ryanair, which seems to be incredibly cheap. $30-$50.

I have been to Europe before.. did summer school in Germany in 2000.

Any other specific or general advice? Want to come? Thanks in advance.

The skiing will more than likely suck the last week of November.

RyanAir only flies into/out of the off-the-beaten path airports. Yeah, they fly out of Frankfurt and other large cities, but it's the tiny airports that aren't easy to get to.

There's a "Sound of Music" tour in Austria that's worthwhile. You go to the places the von Trapp family lived and performed and several sites used in the movie.

You don't mention Spain on your itinerary. If you don't go to the Spanish Mediterranean coast around Barcelona, you're missing the best part of Europe.

Frankfurt is the only place I've been on your list..... it's a great town, although not so American friendly anymore...... of course, the beers are great. There is a high rise tower in downtown, somewhat like Reunion Tower in Dallas, that is nice and gives you a great view. We also found some good prices on German made watches......

Of course Guinness is a given. Also hoping to tour some distillerys along the way...

Spain will have to wait. One just can't go everywhere in Europe in 12 days. We don't want to use all of our time traveling, which is why we picked a couple regions to visit.

In Dublin - Temple Bar District, go into the pubs and watch a soccer game.

Guinness (duh)

Jameson Distillery is cool, they tell you the differences between all the whiskey's and how they are distilled, and then you can sample all of them!

Everywhere else in Ireland -- Castles are the coolest things ever.

There is so much to do, Ireland is a great place. Waterford factory, St. Patrick's Cathedral etc.

Booked my plane ticket last night - got a great deal.

Flight itinerary: Salt Lake City to London; returning 12 days later Munich to Salt Lake City - $530. From Houston it was $450.

Any more suggestions on things to see or do in Ireland/Germany?

IMO there isn't a whole lot to do in Munich. I just walked around the square and drank a lot of Paulaner, chatting it up with the locals. If you have a day to kill, the Dachau concentration camp outside Munich is a must see. If you go, get a picture of the old front gate (Arbeit Macht Frei). I think its about an hour outside the city, by train/bus combo.

Berlin is cool city to visit. I always suggest taking overnight trains with sleeper cars when traveling Europe. You save $ by not having a hotel room and save time by not traveling during the day.

And to think, I was gonna say to throw your beret off of the tower and watch as a little dog dives after it, but there have been much too many European Vacation references on this thread already.

As far as Austria, you can ski on a glacier just outside of the town of Zell am See. What a beautiful place! Stay in one of the hostels for cheap and eat an amazing breakfast.

There is a lot to do in Munich if you are so inclined. If you want a nice tour and the weather is good go on bike tour http://mikesbiketours.com/biketours.html

It is worth the money. There are also a number of museums including the BMW headquarters right across for the Olympic Park. For a nice short day trip go to Daccau concentration camp. Only abou 30-40 minutes by local train. If you are a bit more ambitious go to Rothenberg an ancient walles city that is incredibly picturesque. That is about 1.5-2 hours away. Salzburg is about the same and Heidelberg is a little further. All great options.

Innsbruck is one of the most beautiful cities you will ever see. A lot of history there. If you want a different way into Austria and feel like getting your Swiss Chocolate on go to Interlakken or Luzern. Both beautiful places...

I double on Lucern. It's the most picturesque place I've seen in any country I've ever been. It's literally too good to be true.

I loved Munich as well - it's the ultimate guy's city. All you do is sit around, eat meat, and drink beer. But I think you said you studied in Germany, so I'm sure you know this.
