The casket has to have been buried for 100+ years. There's a good possibility it was nailed shut.

I'm not going to lie I've thought about this before. We have an old segregated cemetery on our property. I am curious as to how they were differently prepared, dressed and the differences in coffins.

I think it would be fascinating to see how different things were.

When I was a kid, I found an old grave from 1850 on the top of a big hill on our property. It had a limestone tombstone on which someone had engraved a cross, a name, and dates by hand, and a pile of limestone rocks on top of the grave. At first I didn't tell anyone and started to dig it up. While digging I found an old hatchet and chisel that was pretty cool. Before I made it to the corpse my mom noticed that I was disappearing the last couple days on my four wheeler with a pick and shovel and figured out what I was doing and stopped me before I finished. I had convinced myself that some bank robbers had robbed a bank and one of them was shot and while on the run died and his partner had buried him along with the money with plans to return and retrieve it one day. It was disappointing not being able to finish, even if there was no gold it would have been pretty cool to dig up a skeleton. We never figured out who the grave belonged to because the engraving was well worn and we couldn't make out the name.

My parent's ended up selling the property and it was turned into a resort/b&b. As far as I know, the grave is still sitting on top of that hill. It was in a pretty remote area that's hard to reach and is surrounded by thick brush, I'd bet the new owners don't even know it's there.

my Mom's been dead 36 years and her casket was guaranteed waterproof for 50 years! I won't do me any good to dig it up and check because the funeral director who guaranteed it....has since died.

post a pic or link from google of the area

you can't see the grave from satellite images because it is surrounded by trees. if i linked to the location on google maps it would be very easy to figure out who i am.

Maybe I'll write one about a space traveler who pilgrimages to planets throughout the universe and studies all of the different religions in an attempt create/discover a unified theory.
