How long do you want to ignore this user?
Got burnt saturday and today started experiencing an itch/ irritation feeling on my back and shoulders. Then WHAM!! felt like a hundred ants biting my under my skin for two hours. easily one of the worst two hours of straight pain i've ever had.

Has anyone on here ever experienced this?

google finally lead me to peppermint oil and an extremely hot bath. Almost instant relief.
Figured I would tell this fine board in case this ever happens to anyone about 48 hours after a sun burn.. Peppermint oil and VERY hot water.

I forgot to put sunscreen on my shins last year before kayaking in Alabama, for the next week they were so burnt that i had a fever, blistering, and extreme pain whenever I bent my legs...not fun

I had that once. my back is already unusually sensitive, I hate people touching my back. I got a pretty bad sunburn on my back and a couple days later it was hell. I actually cried it was so bad

Yes I have gotten it a couple times. The only way i can describe it is having poison ivy with a burn.

The traditional advice on sunburn Is to not take hot showers and keep your skin moist. But when you get hells itch you have to release the histamines which hot showers help. Benadryl helps too.

Can't OD on Benadryl. Just take a bunch and pass out.

Had that a couple times when I was a kid. Once when I was about 12 we went to California for a week, and I got ****ing scorched all over my back and shoulders. About 3 days later, I was writhing in pain on the couch trying not to scratch my back raw.

My dad walked in and told me to man up and go mow the yard...in the middle of August in south Texas. Sweating out in the heat and humidity made the itch 10 times worse. That 30 minutes was probably the most uncomfortable 30 minutes Ive ever experienced.

Hell itch = itch on the bottom of your foot when you're wearing boots and aren't in a position to take them off.

Try wearing a cast on your arm for 6+ weeks without being able to scratch.

As someone who has had over a dozens casts in his childhood, you're doing it wrong with the whole "without being able to scratch" business

Exactly what I did. About 4 benedryl, Shirt off and a soft sheet. I found that any sort of breeze on my skin made the itch start up again.

Sht isn't fun.

Baking soda paste on the burned area helps.

I get the hell itch every time I get sunburned on my back, which is usually once a year. MY miracle cure? Icy Hot. It will hurt like hell for about 10 seconds, and then it goes numb. Its the best thing I've found.

Fresh aloe vera gel (from the leaf) works very well for me.

Ha! I don't understand people. I love being sunburned. Haven't worn sunscreen in close to 25 years. Such an awesome tingly feeling! The only thing I don't like the burn is so bad that my skin begins to crack and break off instead of peeling off in giant soft patches.

Aloe vera gel with lidocaine FTW

Was up for 24 hours one time trying to scratch my back after a sun burn. Thought I was going a little crazy for a couple of hours before I fell asleep.

OH YEA

The best relief I could get was a rag soaked in ice water. Quickly replacing them.

2nd worst night of my life.

I get crazy itches almost every evening - one of those lasting side effects. The best thing I've discovered so far is to lotion the heck out of my skin, stay hydrated and take benedryl when it starts. I'm sleeping more, but it sure helps.

Yup. I never got blisters or anything like that. I had applied sunscreen once during the day, forgot to reapply. It didn't look much different than any other sunburn. I had to visit a clinic, where I got silvadene cream. I can't remember the pain too much, only like I was getting electrocuted for 3 or 4 hours.

I haven't had a sunburn in 20 years. I'm smart enough to keep my clothes on unless I'm inside.

Worst ever. Got the hell itch after 4-5 hrs in the surf at south padre. Put some blue burn relief gel with lidocaine in it and felt like I had put on a shirt made of needles and wool. Got these waves of stings that we're damn near convulsive. Ended up taking Benadryl just to sleep then had to drive the 12 hrs home with the Benadryl residual the next morning. Sucked large as it was a good trip up to that point.

Whatever gel or lotion you end up using...keep it in the fridge.

Got sun poisoning while in key west when I was 18. Was on a cruise with some girlfriends and my dumbass decided to forgo the sunscreen in lieu of tanning oil. Did I mention that I'm super light skinned? Woke up the next morning and blacked out for several minutes. Worst pain ever.

Those recommending lotion or aloe Vera with licodene don't know what hells itch is. It is nothing like regular sunburn itch that those things help with. The things you're listing make it much worse. Hells itch will make a grown man cry.

The anxiety is what's rough too. I agree with benadryl, and or a stronger antihistamine like hydroxyxine...passing out was the only relief.
