I went to the doc and they prescribed a syrup (hydrocodone Clorphen) as an antihistamine and cough suppressant and a z pack.

The side effects of the hydrocode were not good so I switched to zyrtecD I stii have a lot of chest congestion and cough so can intake mucinex along with the Zyrtec D.

Zyrtec D and Mucinex DM are ok to use together. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to help the expectorant (Mucinex) break up your chest congestion.

There's only one way to find out! Better take em both!

As long as they both have different active ingredients, my allergist says it is ok to take both.

I learned the hard way NOT to mix Delsym cough syrup with Mucinex DM. I felt like I was wading through jello, underwater, with cotton in my ears for several hours.

Mucinex has a cough suppressant in it already. Girl, you were high!

Yes you can take them together. Mucinex-DM and Zyrtec-D are four different medications

I think I need to make myself go into the doctor's office. My throat is hurting more and more.

I had this exact same concern a couple weeks ago, and taking the two together was no problem.

I feel I should emphasize what dealer said. If you take mucinex, you should drink at least 12 oz of water with the medication or you are just wasting your money.

Those two are fine together.

Just look at the active ingredients on each med you are taking and make sure there are not duplicates. They even break it down by what the ingredient does (e.g. expectorant, decongestant, etc).

So you don't want to double up on any class of ingredient or you get potentially dangerous side effects. In particular taking double decongestant can be very serious.

I take both, no problems. Use Zyrtec everyday for antihistimine. Use Mucinex D ONLY - never use the DM or M or whatever else. Get the Mucinex D from your pharmacist - you have to sign for it from behind the counter, as you can only get it once every two weeks (I think) Get the largest they have and always keep some on hand.

Caught a chest cold in Fall of 2010, and couldn't shake it. No blood, but just coughing up the crud. When I'd lay down to sleep, it felt like I was drowning. Nyquil, the rest of the stuff out there didn't seem to help dry it up. Found Mucinex-D and literally within five minutes my chest was clear and I was breathing freely. I've been a believer ever since. Clogged up sinuses or chest cold - I'll go straight for the Mucinex-D. Probably could use the other "_______ - D" items out there also - Zyrtec-D, Claritin-D, etc. They all have the Pseudophedrine in them (you have to sign for it because some use it to cook up meth and it's tracked by the gov?).

Zyrtec= antihistamine= system calm the **** down, it's just pollen
D= decongestant= pseudoephedrine (good stuff behind the counter) or phenylephrine (worthless ****)= reduced inflammation to allow drainage

Mucinex= guifanesin (sp?)= mucus thinner= let's get this **** moving (increases mucus production, helps congestion, makes drainage and irritation worse, drink lots of water)

DM= dextromethorphan (sp?)= cough suppressant= helps you sleep if coughing is keeping you awake

If all that isn't enough, take 2 benadryl before bed, use a neti pot to wash your sinuses, suck on cepacol cough drops, take Tylenol
For sinus pressure pain, and/or get a steroid shot in the ass

Tequila, lime, spoonful of honey; repeat until the drugs kick in.

Neti pot rocks, seriously use it.

Whiskey with some honey really helps throat irritation also. Can't use it on my patient population though. And most kids won't tolerate neti pot either.
