Every time i go in these gas stations they are on the phone speaking some foreign language. Who are they talking to?

I have noticed this as well with contractors and security guards. No clue who they talk to all the time.

right. So it's not friends or family, and you usually don't chit chat that long. If you are talking that much, you are probably passing along information.

Yep, it's obvious. The only people with enough time to talk to them all day are the other Pakistani gas station attendants.

so what is the proper nomenclature then? They arent middle eastern, not really what i think of when i say Asian. SO what do you call people from India and Pakistan? Far easterners?

I'm pretty sure that "Paki" is considered to be offensive. I've heard lots of Brittish people use it in a very derogatory context.

This phenomenon is not limited to US gas station attendants. Hop in a Paris cab and the drive will be on the phone jabbering from the time you are in until out. They don't even hang-up when you leave. They just set the phone down while you pay and then resume talking when you leave.

Seriously. What could a cabbie in Paris have to talk about for that length of time?

It's a fact that Pakistanis are over represented among gas station owners relative to their numbers in the general population. The origins of this joke are over 30 years old. This observation is so much a part of American culture that the convenience store owner in The Simpsons is Pakistani. Yet somehow on this thread you suddenly decide its offensive?
