How long do you want to ignore this user?
here's the situation....I had three cousins all apply to A&M for next fall, two of them got in, and the third did not. this third cousin, had the same grades as the other two, but had a slightly better SAT score than the other two.

she got a letter saying she didnt get in, but was welcome to try for the standby list, and was also welcome to try and become part of the blinn/A&M program.

anyone know what kinda chances she stands for either the standby or the co-enrolled? How many students per year are let in on this basis? And when A&M sends out rejection letters , do they send two kinds of rejections out, one saying completely rejected, and the other offering the shot at standby and coenrollment? how does this work?

Please help. Everyone in our family has gotten in , and graduated from here and she's the first one who didnt make it , and she's embarrased and very upset. anyone have any insight?

Rather than the blinn thing...I would try A&M galveston and then transfer up to the A&M campus.

Sorry I'm not too fond of Community colleges.

@ yummy: I'm a freshman this year. I got denied entrance on April 2, 2002. Got offered the waiting list/Blinn program option. I signed up (what do you have to lose...). I got in May 29, 2002 (Graduation day, no less).

My high school GPA/rank: 3.51, 2nd quarter (top 35%)

Kids with worse grades got in before me. Their system is all ****ed up. But I was one of 375 kids that got in off of the waiting list out of around 2,000 that signed up.

I would write and speak to people in admissions. Ask to modify her application and ask for reconsideration. Volunteer for a personal interview. Show that she is gung ho on TAMU.

Don't listen to the not fond of community colleges bit and tell her to go to Blinn. If she opts for the wait list that means probably 2000 other students are too and they will choose maybe 750. The first year it was offered, Fall 01 only 500 made the cut.If she has college credit from HS or takes classes this summer she can go as transfer. Blinn costs about $800 for beginning classes that cost $4000 at A&M.Tell her to go to the Rec center and apply for a job and become a member of OCA(Off Campus Aggies)both are open to Blinn students and then she is in town and part of the scene...find a foreign student who bought a sports pass and doesn't have a clue what its for and get FB tickets. It has become a racket to get into A&M but after one semester at Blinn she can transfer with little hassle. IF she signs the wait option she will be really limited if she does get in and then too late for dorms...no matter what the form says the rooms are already filled! Been there done that had a daughter who kept her fingers crossed for months. Find out who the head of her intended major is and talk with them about required pre reqs and go toward those.Keep a paper copy of every email and letter she receives because A&M is too big and too many offices lose stuff.

Total no brainer. She needs to take the Blinn route, it may take a semester or two but she will be in College Station and will not miss out on the "college" experience. Transfering into A&M, to me anyway, seems like a much easier process than getting in right out of high school anyway. Which is odd. I spent a semester at Blinn and actually enjoyed it.

Although you need to warn her about the Blinn trap that caught a few of my friends. It is easier than A&M, no question about it, but a few of my friends took that to far and blew off their classes thinking they were going to get easy A's. Well, they got to the end of the semester and had C's, which doesn't help in transfering. So tell her to keep an eye out.

I assume you are talking about the TEAM Blinn program? I would try speaking to admissions personally first then I would suggest the TEAM program.
quote:
The Blinn TEAM students will be able to access most student services and programs on both campuses. If they are eligible for financial aid, they will be able to receive financial aid through Blinn College based upon their combined hours.

Blinn TEAM students will complete the program successfully by completing 45 hours at Blinn with a 3.0 and 15 hours at Texas A&M University with a 3.0. Those students who meet the requirement will automatically become full-time students at Texas A&M and will not have to apply as transfer students. They may be able to use their combined hours to receive their Associate's Degree from Blinn College.

Mom: I think if she's in TEAM Blinn she can do all of those things (football, OCA, etc.).

EDIT: I looked at the website some more and I think the only things you CANNOT do as part of the TEAM program are be an officer in an organization and join a Fraternity/Sorority. You are eligble to do every thing else and access all of A&M's resources (Computing Center, On Campus Housing, Libraries, etc.)

If I were in your cousin's situation I would definitely join the TEAM program if she isn't offered admission.

what major did they apply for? this has a lot to do with it. Business, Engineering, Agricutlre, and Architecture all have "limited" acceptance. General studies is your best bet, then change major later on.

i work in the office of admissions. i coudl answer your questions if you email direct. froglep@aol.com

There are so few students picked for Team Blinn it is not really worth her getting excited about. All you need to transfer is 12 hours with a 2.5 for some majors and a 3.0 for the rest. With the options, they are looking at 24 hours which means applying in spring for fall and it is easier to get in for spring.Yes, looking at Blinn as a blow off and ending up with poor grades will not help.

yes twins, I think I'll take you up on that...
I talked to her again tonight, and she is really down....she's the first one in 2 generations in our family to apply and not get in....and she doesnt understand why.

she's top 28%, and has about a 3.5 GPA, 28 act, and I cant remember what the SAT was, but it exceeded A&M's general requirements.

I will email you and get more info. Is it possible to set up that personal interview like someone mentioned above? If she can do that, hopefully she can get them to change their minds.

I hear that A&M really looks at community service and leadership when deciding admissions. I know when I came up here everyone got in off the waitlist. She can call and see where on the list she stands. Also they are real good with letting people in from Blinn, but I definately think she could get in off the waitlist, the odds are good.

Hey Yummy, I'm the jerk that sends out denial letters. We sent two types of denials last week. One was the complete denial that we sent to scrubs and the other was the deny wait list/blinn team that we sent to people that had better applications that didn't make the cut.

On last years' letter, the text said something to the effect that the previous year we had 1500 sign up for the wait list and admitted 375. This ratio really depends on what percentage of the people sign up for a New Student Conference by the May 1st deadline.

I would suggest that your relative sign up for the wait list and blinn team(I think you can select both options). She sounds like she would probably get in on the wait list and if she doesn't then I would still suggest Blinn Team because of the guaranteed full admission to A&M after completing 60 hours.

Transfer admissions is tough if you apply for College of Business, Engineering, or Architecture.

Do not recommend that she go to a non-JUCO to transfer from. A&M doesn't care how hard the school you are transferring from is. They only care about the number of transfer hours completed and your transfer GPA. This is why an easy JuCo is the best place to tranfer from, in my opinion.

When should my letter get here? I applied to business. I want to manage a recording studio, or be a lawyer, I'm not sure which. I have a 2.29 at Angelina College(2nd best school in Texas). I moved not that long ago so maybe it got lost. Yall said they don't come out for a while though, right?

Read AggieMaster's sentence about guaranteed admission after 60 hours! That means four semesters of 15 hours each...less than that she has signed a contract and cannot get in. Go the wait list but also apply at Blinn, find an apartment and PLAN on going to Blinn...if she gets accepted she has lost nothing because their app fee is tacked on at registration. She can move forward and the stress and personal defeat will get better! TRUST me we did this whole thing with a daughter who got A's at Blinn and has a 3.6 at A&M...lots of really good students are being culled out because of numbers, that's all.Do not commit to Team Blinn because it is longer to get to A&M.

I went to blinn for a year and then transferred in, probably the best thing that could have happened for me. I had a goal and didn't stop until I achieved it.

Damn, I almost forgot that I went to Blinn, it's such a distant memory.

My daughter still has not got a letter of any kind concerning admission or denial. I was told by admissions a couple of days ago that all of the letters were mailed last week. This is about to drive her over the edge. I guess that the post office is just super slow where we live. Is my info about all letters going last week correct or not? Our whole family sure needs to know something before we go nuts.

This is an off topic question but, is that a typical correlation between gradepoint and class standing today? It's been 17 years since I graduated high school but a 3.51 seems like an awfully inflated GPA on a 4.0 scale for a 35th percentile graduation rank. I graduated HS from a class of 524 and the 10th percentile was in the 3.4 GPA range and only one student out of 524 had a 4.0. What sort of SAT score would one expect a 3.5 GPA to earn today?

You get extra credit with honors courses. On top of that, grades are probably a ton easier these days.

Exactly. I had a cousin two years ago in the same situation. There is no reason not to sign up for both. He ended up getting accepted to A&M off the waitlist in plenty of time. The only realy problem was that he wasn't able to get on-campus.

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Instead of relying on this website make a call to any of the admissions counselors (979) 845 3741. They will tell give you the correct information. Too late now, but any prospective student should have contacted admissions before they applied and throughout the admissions process. Prospects can empower themselves by staying in touch with any of the admissions counselors either in College Station or the regional offices in San Antonio, Weslaco or Dallas.

TerrTwins, I didnt say that everything was wrong. I did say there is a lot of misinformation and it is better to actually keep in contact with the office of admissions than the information on this website. I think to anyone with a rational brain, this would make a tremendous amount of sense.

Misinformation:

Good suggestion, but applications cannot be modified after the application deadline set... but it won't hurt to talk to admissions about her options.

quote:

Not true for undergraduate admissions... you apply to get into A&M not a specific major or degree program. The colleges of Business, Engineering, Agriculture, and Architecture do all have limited space in their programs, but the college you apply to is not even considered as part of the admissions process to A&M... you get accepted to A&M first and then they look at what major you want. If that college is full, they will accept you as a General Studies major and give you a chance to make grades and then chane to that major.

Transfer admissions is a different story... with that you apply to get into a specific college.

Its not easy filtering through 18,000+ applications in a matter of months and giving each student fair opportunity for admissions. If you knew how the system worked and the process that the applications go through it might really change your opinion about this. There are many things that come to play, and most applications are reviewed by multiple people on multiple occasions before a denial is made on them.

I vote to skip the admissions counselors at Koldus! They tell you what A&M is looking for and then you earn it and it doesn't matter anyway! They lose files between there and the Metro Centre and act like it is the student's fault. We applied for a dorm and could prove the dates we received forms due to A&M's screwup and then were told OH WELL, we really did not have housing for all the waiting students anyway. My daughter went the wait list but not Team Blinn route, earned all A's and had 37 hours to transfer from Blinn in one year and A&M overlooked one page of her transcript...that put her behind on filing everything else. We talked to the dept head who saw the error when she pulled up the transcript on computer and got her admitted that day!

aggie-master

Is very correct about everything that he has said... By the way.

GPA's comming out of high school brings up a very interesting point. There is no grading standard through out schools.

Some schools use the traditional 4 point scale... others have a 4 point scale, but you get bonus points for taking advanced and AP classes so they can make above a 4.0. Some schools use a 5 point scale, others a 6point, and some even use 7 point scales.

Some of these schools have multiple point scales depending on what types of programs the students are in. So GPA is not a true indicator anymore.

JoeM., There is misinformation everywhere. I just called the admissions counselor office and was told that what I was told on Tuesday as to all letters having been mailed last week is false. The gentleman that I spoke with said that the last batch of letters went out Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

ar12aggiedad - My letter was actually lost in the mail. All of my friends had received something and I finally got tired of waiting and called. They said they had mailed the letter two weeks ago and they would send another.

I'd give it till the middle of next week and call provided you're not in the Middle East.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
CooterBrown, I was starting to think that my girl's was lost in the mail too until I spoke with the admissions counselor. He said that if we did not have it by next Tuesday to call them again. I got to thinking also that they might mail them according to zip codes and possibly that ours, being way out in West Texas, may have been at the end of the list. I had always been told that the earlier you applied, that you would be some of the first to get a decision. I guess that that is not the case either. Just more mis-information I guess.
