Dumb? No. Stupid? Yes.

The difference is that the statement, as written, indicates that the construction is acceptable, while the premise is absurd.

That being said, I'm impressed that a professional basketball player can speak (or write) the Queen's English that well.

don't we use war as a metaphor in sports all the time? "the trenches", etc. seems to be about par for the course...its just that people are a little more sensitive about it right now, given current events
