I think that as a beginner, it might be helpful in improving your skill to listen one note at a time and learn it by ear. I used to do that with all kinds of melodies when I was first learning, it really helps develop your ear.

I just find that learning by ear helps you bring out all the different sounds of the guitar, which I think is his intention.
