I have a guy coming to look at my car in a couple hours to buy it. I have been doing some research, like document sales price, do it at public place, print off Form 130, make a bill of sale and etc.

The only question is that I keep my plates right?

No, he can't ride around without plates. When he gets the registration and title change they may or may not give him new plates.

Go to the tax office with him. Do the title change/registration. Keep your plates.

Done.

They will if he asks.

+1 go to the Tax office with him. Make sure it's done and done right and then transfer the vehicle to him

Apparently I leave the plates on, and fill out this form and the responsibility is no longer on me.

In addition to the bill of sale, your title should have a section that he signs and you sign and send in to the state. That documents the transaction to protect you in case they never officially transfer out of your name. Plates stay with the car.

Absolutely accompany them to the tax office for the title change. Also fill out the change of registration form (don't remember form #) right away and mail in. If they want new plates they can buy them when you do the title change but not required.

there is a tab on the back of the clear title that you can fill out and mail to Austin...it states you sold the car on XX/XX/XXXX and from then on it's the buyer's deal

however, we sold two Ranger pick ups to a Mexican man and the tax office gave him hell when he tried to register both of them.

Keep your license plates and transfer them to your new vehicle.

When you keep your license plates, the buyer has to transfer the vehicle title and this helps to protect you.

When you take off the plates, the buyer will need a Vehicle Transit Permit to drive the vehicle to the county tax office to re-title the car or truck.

quote:
If the seller chooses the recommended option of removing the license plates and registration sticker from the vehicle, you will need to download a Vehicle Transit Permit. This will allow you to legally drive the vehicle to the county tax office to transfer the title and obtain registration (license plates and sticker) for the vehicle or, if the county tax office is closed, to a place of your choice. This permit is valid for five calendar days and only one permit may be issued per vehicle sale.
You also have the option of moving the un-plated vehicle on a trailer (no permit required) if you need to move it prior to contacting the county
