I've noticed some hate on threads about Greek life and mainly fraternity's, although when people did the organization thread a lot more people were in fraternity's then I thought on here. I am just wondering why people are so against it? Some people say paying for friends, but in reality you pay for any organization, but not all organizations have as many events. So what's the difference? You get dewsches in any organization, but like the corp fraternity's are just more recognizable. So was it just a bad experience somewhere or something else.

Full disclosure I was in a social fraternity and honors fraternity and I had many friends join it before I even did it, and made what I feel are life long friends/brothers.
Any serious and typical GB responses are encouraged.

people in frats tend to have lower character. they are simply members of the borg, not individuals developing their own personal character.

I sat in front of a group of Aggies and teasips who were both in a frat for the final Lone Star Showdown this year.

This is how a conversation went:

teasip: O. Are they good here? They are at tu.
Aggie: They think they are. Which is why their blood ends up on ng a lot.

Don't they sound really cool?

I think most of it is left over from the on campus bonfire days. Dorm unity, rivalry, bonfire leadership traditions etc... all gave strong bonding opportunities based on shared experiences that were genuine and real.

Not saying the Greek experience is fake, just that given the opportunity to take the current situation you are in and embrace is, vs. forcing a bond via rush (and dues) is probably where it began.

here's why I don't like them. A lot (not all) think that their frat is important and they are somehow better or cooler than the rest of us, when in reality nobody gives a flying #$@# about all of your themed parties, formals and greek drama. That being said I also realize that being in a frat does not make you a bad person and most of them are good people. I just don't see the point of the entire thing.

I should also add that I was involved with basically nothing while at A&M other that hardcore partying and later frequenting Northgate 2-4 times per week.

Frats and corps boys

I was involved in many organizations at aTm and was also one of those guys who went to NG 4-5 nights a week.

I knew a lot of guys in frats and one on one they were good guys, the problem with frats is when you get groups of those guys together in the same place they turn into total douch ers. They start fights in bars, they destroy things, and treat women like crap (granted most of the sloots that hang with frat guys and give it up so easily probably deserve it).

I also don't get the appeal of looking and dressing just like every other person you hang out with. Also the amount of money they pay to be in a frat is ridiculous.

I also hate the hazing and don't get why you would want to do that to anyone (and I lived with two guys that went through rush one each with a different frat and that **** is for real). The kinds of degrading things they do to eachother is just not worth it to me. The day someone, who is suppose to be my "friend" decides they have to pee on me (or way worse) or else I can't join their club is they day I leave.

I guess most people just find the whole concept immature and kinda sad. You can make a ton of great friends, party balls, meet girls, and have parties without being in a frat.

Because needing some group/symbol/allegiance outside of your ring and diploma flies in the face of what we are brought up to believe about our university and the opportunities and stature it offers by simply being an Aggie.
