In Spanish, two Ls are pronounced as a Y.

Cooder Graw sings it, "Yano". I've always thought it was "Lano". Is there an English and Spanish pronunciation?? Are either acceptable??

Yes, it's pronounced "Yano"... Double L in Spanish means "Y" pronuncination.

In English, I guess it would have the L sound -- like in the word "llama"

it is pronounced "yano." there is even a llano estacado winery. they are pretty good too, only about 15 miles from my parents house.

btw, Llano Estacado is a geographic area near and around Lubbock. I think that is what the plateau on the south edge of the south plains is called right before you reach the caprock.

Llano (Lano) is a town NW of Austin.

it depends on how much of an idiot you wanna sound like. you should say "yano" but some people way "lan-o" or "lawn-o".

like any other word that's spanglish... you'll find different texas folk pronouncing it differently.

yep.

But we mispronounce a lot of spanish words.

Amarillo would be "ama-REE-o" if pronounced correctly. no L sound at all.

Durango would be "du-RON-go" not "dur-ANG-o"

etc

Llano is pronounced wrong because all the Germans in the area tried to fix it! They go to Blanco(Blank-o) and they fish in the Perd-nallus. But you pronounce some German word wrong and you get an ear full.

for the trivia folks: in american (i.e. new world) spanish, "ll" is generally pronounced like english "y", "j", or the "zs" in zsa zsa gabor. in spain, however, they pronounce it differently. try putting your tongue up against the roof of your mouth, kind of like you're going to make the "k" sound in keep. then make an "l" sound. it sounds a lot like a "y" or maybe "ly" sound, so it's hard to differentiate between them.
