for the same reason San Felipe is pronounced San Felipee...to confuse outsiders.

houston... at least there are no letters that you just completely leave out of the pronunciation. and you pronounce it hyoo-stun.

san antone is a nickname for san antonio.

worcester = wooster? that makes no sense at all.

why dont Javelina and Jalapeno start with an "H"?

why do Knife and Knight start with a "K"?

Why is abbreviation such a long word?

Why do you park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?

How come Phillipines spelled with a "P", but Filipino spelled with an "F"?

How come phonics is spelled with a "Ph"?

Regional dialects. I actually think they make language kinda fun.

There's a road in Austin spelled Manchaca, pronounced Man-chack. Why? I don't know, just is.

Why is Pedernales pronounced Perd-nales (by most people)? Just is.

jared points out two good examples. what about cuero? boerne? and how about refugio, i mean refurio. texans are crazy too apparently.

you can't say "perd-nales". yuo can say "perd-er-nales". you can't pronounce a d followed by an n. people are just saying the word quickly.

same goes for Boerne. bo-er-nee. say it real fast. boerne. ber-nee.

heres one that drives me nuts!
San Antonio is located in Bexar county, BUT it is pronounced "bear" If you want to pronounce it in Spanish it would be pronounced "Bea-HAR" (or something like that) or in English BeX-Ar, where the **** did "Bear" come from?!?!?!

Why don't those damn FedEx planes fly directly to Houston? Why do they fly to Memphis first?

Actually, it's not even pronounced "Wooster". It sounds more like "Wis-tah". On the other hand, "Dorchester" sounds pretty much like it's spelled, except for the 'r' coming out like 'ah'. Other oddities include "Quincy" being prounounced "Quinzy"and Leominster as "lemmenstah".
