To your last question? YES. I've only been there once and it was 2 days before my 21st birthday. It SUCKED because they were everywhere watching. I saw several people get in trouble. I managed to get lucky and not get caught.

float above the bridge (although you probably won't have a choice after the flooding)

if you float outside city limits there are no cooler size restrictions, and pretty much no cops.

if you have shoes you don't care about, wear them. don't bring flip flops.
bring beer, not liquor, and lots of it.

keep your tube wet at all times to avoid tube rash.

wear lots of sunscreen, and bring sunscreen on the river with you. don't wear sunglasses you care about.
don't forget to get a trash sack from the tube place, if you litter on the river, i'll personally kill you.

bring big tittied wimmen for me to look at as i float past.

TIA

Cops are ALL OVER! Even though it makes absolutely zero sense, do not get out of the water to pee! Big trouble awaits those who think peeing in a river is wrong.

Flip flops are fine. We usually being a roll of twine with us to tie our flip flops (and other things) to our tubes.

Double ziplock things you REALLY don't want to get wet! (keys/ID/etc) Even with that though, it's not worth the risk to take your cell phone.

Before going over a rapid, take off your hat/sunglasses/etc and hold onto them. If you're wearing them before you go over, you won't be by the time you do.

If you're low on beer, hang out a little down-river from a rapid. Coolers tend to flip over, spilling cans into the water.

That advice is applicable in a couple scenarios.

Also, cans not bottles. Sounds logical, but people are idiots.

I disagree if you're going to have to walk at all. I've done it with flip flops and water socks and it's much easier to navigate the slippery rocks with something that goes over the top of your foot.

just think of it as another place where cops sit to rack up tickets on people committing minor, victimless infractions ... plus remember to take care of it so you can enjoy it again (and everyone else can, too) and you'll be OK

i'm with beer on this one, old crappy sneakers are the way to go!

and you should be putting on sunscreen and keeping you tube wet all day (that is not intended to be dirty so no FIFY) as was previously stated

Plan to start floating at around 11 AM or before. Tube rental places and the river get extremely backed up right around/after lunchtime.

1. Buy 32 oz. Gatorade.
2. Drink half of the Gatorade before float.
3. Pour vodka into Gatorade bottle, filling up to the top.
4. Drink on the river.
5. Bust your ass trying to get out of your tube at the end of the float because you can't walk straight.

Who ever said flip flops are fine is a dumbass.

I grew up on the guad. Tennis shoes tied tight is the only way to go.

Also, do not tube with your back down river.

Eat lunch on top of the rock halfway thru the horseshoe, except it may be covered in water

No styrofoam coolers. Don't litter. Shoes over flip flops. Canned beer, about twice what you think you could normally consume. No cops above second crossing. Sunscreen. Cheap shades. Snacks. More beer. Poo before you float.
About 40 of us are going to be there too. Can't wait.

I went last weekend. It was very slow (150cfs). It seemed to be really low too. There were cops wading in the river maybe an hour into it. It was packed. That's just about all I remember. I'm pretty sure I fell about 20 times trying to stand up at the end.

That's my usual plan. Or replace gatorade with coke and vodka with cheap bourbon.

Definately agree on the tennis shoes, break out an old pair....it's a must.

NO GLASS. NO EXCEPTIONS. You will get a huge fine if you have even 1 glass bottle. And yes, they actively search your coolers before you launch. And if you wear flip-flops you are an idiot.

I got this in my news digest...
quote:
NEW BRAUNFELS (AP) — The Comal River and the Guadalupe River have reopened for recreation about two weeks after strong storms led to flooding that swamped some areas.

New Braunfels Mayor Bruce Boyer on Thursday announced the reopening of the rivers.

A statement from the city says the rivers and affected parks in New Braunfels have undergone extensive cleanup since June 9 flooding, but the public should be alert to the potential of more debris.

Rebuilding of a footbridge between Prince Solms Park and Hinman Island should be completed within the coming week, temporarily requiring tubers to walk down Hinman Island Drive from Prince Solms Park to enter the Comal River.

We always do the float from the beginning of the horseshoe to 4th crossing, takes about 4 hours and is a pretty good float. ROX tubes is the cheapest, last time I went is was $10 a tube and they pick you up at the end.

Cops are on the river and they are checking for glass and strofoam, if you are not of age I would definitely be careful.

No cops above second crossing.

Not true last weekend - deputies were wading at a narrow spot about halfway through the horseshoe (which is up above the fourth crossing). They were asking to search all coolers...I figured a PI was in store for anyone who'd been drinking and said no to the search...didn't see anyone refuse. They were at least friendly & fast about doing it.

It could be due to them draining some of the lakes just below NB after the flood. I know lake mcqueeney was lowered 6 feet on Saturday to mark crap still in it - so that is probably why....
FirstGenAg07

You're probably right. Last Friday, it was at 500cfs, then Saturday and Sunday they slowed it to 150.

Toobing was fantastic last weekend. Great weather and water flow was perfect.

As for cops above 2nd crossing. I should have said between 2nd and 3rd crossings. I've been toobing that area for 10+ years and have never seen a cop. However, some of the campsites will have cops there at night in case any late night partiers get out of control.

One time I saw a dude just toss a beer can into the river on the frio - just threw it into the water behind him.

I grabbed the can filled it with water and threw it back at him.

We're staying at a cabin between the 2nd and 3rd crossing, near the chute. What are the chances of seeing drunk hoochies floating past us?
