I have a friend who can not afford to by his ring. I offered to loan him the money but he refused it so I want to go buy the ring myself for him and surprise him. Can I do that or will they need him to be there? I'm going to call and ask tomorrow but was hoping somebody could tell me this late at night.

I don't think there are scholarships for the Ring yet, but I was told by someone in Financial Aid that the Association is working on one.

And I think you can buy a Ring for someone as a gift, as long as you have their info for the audit, etc. (UIN, name, etc.) One of my roommate's got his ring as a gift, and the giver surprised him with the ring receipt.

You can, and I don't think you even need his audit info. We went & ordered the SO's dad one from `78.

If you don't end up doing it, he can apply for an Aggie Ring loan at SFS...it's a short-term loan with a pittance of an interest rate.

I was thinking about this, and it seems like your heart is in the right place, but have you thought about what his reaction will be? I don't know about him but if a plain old friend (not best friend or bf or something) bought me an $800 ring, I'd be mortified. It feels like charity.

If all my friends chipped in, I'd be okay with it. Unless y'all are like best buds, maybe...and even then you might want to bill it as a "hey, pay me back whenever you can...I don't care if it's years from now..." kinda deal.
