How long do you want to ignore this user?
Anyone know? My brother who used to have perfect vision came back with 20/100 in both eyes. Just wondering how bad that is.

I think a doctor would tell you that, medically/scientifically speaking, it sucks. But my lay-opinion is that it's just pretty bad.

yeah, it sounds pretty darn bad:

quote:
20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.

It's not THAT bad. I have 20/70 in my worst eye, and my correction is only a few "clicks" ... -1.5.

I'm corrected to 20/10 or 20/15 with my glasses, though. ;-)

If it's any consolation, the FBI has a vision requirement for its agents, and it's only 20/200, I think. That means the government will give you a gun and a badge if your vision is 20/190.

That's a lot better than mine.

I think that's better than my eyesite... my contacts are -12.5 left and -13.5 right.

I can't read the big 'E' on the eye chart without my contacts in.

Thank goodness for contacts, though having had contacts for 15 years now my eyesite really doesn't bother me.

I can't see the big E without squinting and mine are no where near as bad as Dallas'. My contacts are -4.5 and -4.75.

How do those new numbers translate to 20/20...what is the equivalent of -4.75?

My eyes are -1.25...what would that be in terms of 20/x?

I was at -1.25 for a while, and my eyes were 20/60.

Not nearly as bad as vision 20/20.

Mine was around 20/15 for years.

But now if I try to read fine print in not very good light, I'm starting to have problems.

Same hear, no big E

my contacts are -14.5 in both eyes. They are called diopter readings. What ever that means.

How do I read my contact lens prescription?

Contact lens prescriptions are usually read left to right. Please note that depending on your individual vision needs, you may not have all of the following items on your prescription:
OD represents right eye
OS represents left eye
Sphere power is the actual power of the contact lens
Cylinder (if any) is the power of the astigmatism correction
Axis (if any) is the alignment of the contact lens in the eye
Base curve is the surface curvature of the contact lens
Diameter is the total size across the lens

Anyway, A&M01, don't worry about how bad your brother's vision is, as long as his eyes are healthy and they say it's correctable.

My brother-in-law (who just turned 16), had a blood vessel burst in one eye, and now he has dead spots in his vision and straight lines look wavy. Then, less than a year later, had an outbreak of shingles (which is caused by the chickenpox virus) that attacked the other eye. He is having surgery on that eye Thursday to reattach the retina and to try to filter out the liquid in the eye, which has become cloudy because of the effects of the virus.

He'll probably never have very good vision again, and glasses or contacts can't correct it.

20/100 is NOT all that bad. Requires correction, but the glasses won't be all that thick.

You'll hear the term "legally blind" mis-used all the time as being at 20/200 (which is pretty bad, but the glasses aren't noticeably thicker than lower corrections, thanks to modern high refractive index materials). If your eyesight can't be CORRECTED to better than 20/200, then you're legally blind.
