Answers to our most frequently asked contact lens questions
How do I read my contact lens prescription?
Contact lens prescriptions are usually read left to right. Please note that depending on your individual vision needs, you may not have all of the following items on your prescription:
OD represents right eye
OS represents left eye
Sphere power is the actual power of the contact lens
Cylinder (if any) is the power of the astigmatism correction
Axis (if any) is the alignment of the contact lens in the eye
Base curve is the surface curvature of the contact lens
Diameter is the total size across the lens

Anyway, A&M01, don't worry about how bad your brother's vision is, as long as his eyes are healthy and they say it's correctable.
My brother-in-law (who just turned 16), had a blood vessel burst in one eye, and now he has dead spots in his vision and straight lines look wavy. Then, less than a year later, had an outbreak of shingles (which is caused by the chickenpox virus) that attacked the other eye. He is having surgery on that eye Thursday to reattach the retina and to try to filter out the liquid in the eye, which has become cloudy because of the effects of the virus.
He'll probably never have very good vision again, and glasses or contacts can't correct it.
