This has been on my mind for a long time. How does Creed justify taking the Lord's name in vain?

What's This Life For?

Hurray for a child
That makes it through
If there's any way
Because the answer lies in you
They're laid to rest
Before they've known just what to do
Their souls are lost
Because they could never find
What's this life for
i see your soul, it's kind of gray
You see my heart you look away
You see my wrist, I know your pain
I know your purpose on your plane
Don't say your last prayer
Because you could never find
What's this life for
But they ain't here anymore
Don't have to settle the score
Cause we all live
Under the reign of one king
They ain't here anymore
Don't have to settle no ******* score
Cause we all live
Under the reign of one king
They ain't here anymore
Don't have to settle no goddamn score
Cause we all live
Under the reign of one king

First Battman, then Cutie, now Creed. What is going on?

I have always brought that up when people say Creed is a Christian band. Ink of a cross on the lead singer's arm doesn make them Christian.

Sorry I couldnt lay it out for you better than that.

I may be going out on a limb here...

...but maybe it's because all Christians aren't perfect like others think they are. Just a thought...however...

Creed does not proclaim themselves as a Christian band...their fans labeled them as such.

I hate hearing GD though. That is my least favorite cuss word. I can deal with just about all the other ones, but not that. Wish that song didnt have that in it.

I agree...I don't like GD either and I will admit I sometimes slip and say it and then kick myself. I don't think there's reason to intentionally put it in a song, but it's their right to do so.

I dont really like songs about suicide either, although another one of my favorite songs stems from a suicide. "Center Aisle" by Caedmon's Call was written when Derek Webb (lead singer/writer/guitarist) had to sing at his best friend's sister's funeral after she killed herself. It is very touching, and I know how it feels. I have had to sing at a few funerals, and it is never easy.

"The Rich Song" by Caedmon's Call was also written by Derek Webb after Rich Mullins (big Christian artist, CC's mentor) died in a car accident on the way to a concert. I sang that for my grandfather when he died this Christmas.

They could have put a lot of other negative two sylable words there. GD is pretty strong and I would rather not hear it, all things considered, but a friend's suicide is pretty rough and demanding on your emotions.

The last two Caedmon's Call albums are excellent. That band is loaded with talent.

How can you say Creed is not Christian? Half the songs on their My Own Prison album are VERY religious in nature.

The reason that is in this song, is because they're singign lyrics of poems he wrote when he was struggling between good and evil and heaven and hell. They decided to sing the lyrics to the song, signifying his struggle, and that's why that's on there. That's what he wrote when he wsa going through all of that. They're not, per say, a Christian band, but they sing lyrics (Esp. from My Own Prison) that Stapp wrote when he was struggling with religion and finding his spirtiuatlity, therefore the christian undertones are very evident. Hope this helps answer your question. If you get a chance watch Vh1's Behind the Music with Creed. It's really nice to hear explanations of all of that stuff.

I believe that God considers taking His name in vain a worse sin than murder.

Murder is a sin against man. Taking the Lord's name in vain is a sin against God directly.

Bracy, blasphmy against the Holy Spirit is different from Blasphemy against God.

Just like murder, it's a sin that can be forgiven. But just like murder, it's a sin that requires confession and repentance.

Jesus didn't die so that we could continue sinning.

BattMan:

You must not have paid attention to the first part of the verse: "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men"

AGGODDESS:

I'm saying that a sin against God is worse than a sin against man. If one takes the Lord's name in vain, then he/she might as well shake their fist and curse at Him, because it's the same thing.

The Jews understood this. They had so much respect for His name that they would not even utter it, in order to show the highest level of respect possible for His name. On the one day of the year in which the high priest would pronounce His name on the Day of Atonement, the Jews would fall down on their faces and shout: "Blessed be The Name!"

Taking the Lord's name in vain is not something to trifle with. It is a very serious matter.

Let's say I bump into an old friend from college and I say "Well G*damn it sure is good to see you again!". Would this qualify as taking the Lord's name in vain or shouting his name in glory and joy?

Rage Against The Orange:

I certainly don't believe that using His name in that manner glorifies His name. Do you?

Using His name in vain was a crime punishable by death.

Exodus 20:7: "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name."

Sounds pretty serious to me.

Being that I'm human, I make mistakes, which include taking the Lord's name in vain. I do ask for His forgiveness because I believe it is appropriate, at least for me. What I don't get is why people find it preferable when there are so many choices of cussing available. Can someone explain that to me?

I never say that, but now that I know it pisses people off, I'll be saying it a lot more.
