Shaine Casas just went 1.55.79 to take 2nd behind tsip Austin Katz' 1.55.72.

For reference 1.55.85 took the bronze medal at the World Championships last week. Gold was 1.53.40..

Casas has dropped 3 seconds since last summer and will be a sophomore this coming year. He's 19 years old. Olympic medalist next year?

3rd fastest in the U.S., 6th in the world this year.

Mark Theall posted a 1:47.19 200 free as well in the B Final. That should have him up in the top 10 for the U.S. and in the Olympic relay mix next year if he keeps on his improvement path. Also a threat in the 400 free for sure.

I was at a high school meet in Corpus Christi in Nov-17 just sitting in the stands and this tall kid walked by during warm-ups. Perfect long swimmer frame. I turned to my wife and said, "I don't know who that is, but he's going to the Olympics". Turned out to be Casas. Looks like I may have been right!
