This time in Mexico. Ibanez won the 100 free, Medrano won the 100 fly. Rita 2nd in 200 IM.

Medrano top seed going into 200 fly finals.

Yawn, just another day at the flagship.

(And still no mention on AA, I would presume they're planning a writeup after the meet is over?)

Is this meet a World Champs qualifier for them? or are they just doing it to maintain relations with their federation?

I'm pretty sure it's a world champs qualifier. That said, the Mexican federation has done some sketchy stuff in the past with some of our guy swimmers so I can't say that with absolute certainty.

What LOB said.

Not many qualifying times going up though anyways. Ibanez snuck under the B-cut by .01, Medrano missed in the 100 but made it in the 200 fly.

Ibanez might have "technically" earned a spot in Shanghai, but they wouldn't be the only federation in the world who would leave a 56.59 home...She was a little faster last summer at the Carribean Games (56.29)-which is a FINA Approved qualifying meet, but that still leaves her out of the top 130 in the world from 2010.

My guess is that Medrano has been assured a roster spot by the federation, given her seeming lack of a taper, based on her times from the Caribbean Games last year (though her 2010 season best marks were swum at Mexican Nationals in April, which are not listed as a qualifier by FINA). She went similar times (1:00.21/2:11.25) at the Caribbean Games though. If I had to guess, Medrano goes and Ibanez stays home, unless Mexico decides to send a relay.

Note that not every country does their qualifying like the US (where it's one meet, top swimmers from that meet go).

Rumor has it Pan Ams are in Mexico this summer. Not sure if that will throw a wrench in things as far as world champs go. I could see Mexico wanting that as a higher priority since they're hosting...
