After the 24 hour delay we get to see some fast swimming. Probably not as fast from some as we wouldve expected before the sickness, but still fast.

Gig Em Ags!

EDIT: got my start times confused

this is the 2nd time (i think) that you've called it a 26 hour delay... i'm confused. the meet was delayed a day from what i understand. are they starting at 2 now?
texagg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ah, I thought the meet was originally going to start at 10am, so when they pushed it back to noon on the second day, thats where I got the 26 hours. My mistake.
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nope. And it's noon EDT, so 11 here.

its weird to me that the mens and womens meets start at different times. thats what confused me mostly i guess.

Itll be interesting to see if our guys can repeat their solid performance from conference in the 200FrR. I think they exceeded expectations in that relay, so hopefully they can do it again. I know Casey and Balazs can/will be faster, and itll be interesting to see if Boris or Bergstrom will take the 4th spot.

Doesnt look like the stomach bug had much effect on anyone...wow. Texas and Stanford both at the top, and zona not far behind. 19.0 for Adrian and Feigen holy crapola. Solid swim by our guys, Maybe they can win the B heat tonight, gonna be a big race.

Looking a bit ahead to the battle for Top 10, Ohio State DQd their relay. Thats some decent points down the drain for them...
AGBlastoff

Wow, that could be huge for us. Yeah, Feigen seems to have gotten past the bug. Times were right where you'd expect them to be, so it seems the extra day didn't hurt anybody too badly.

Feigen must not have been too sick. He is seeded 1st for finals with a 18.97. He is the only one under 19.

Strange was 4th in his heat out of lane 1 with a 19.74. He was just a bit out of consols (21st).

good swim for Casey, close to his lifetime best I think.

GREAT 400 medley for the guys. missed out A final by one spot last year, but not today!
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The 400 MR was a terrific swim. Really strong legs by Lavery and Balasz.

Added: Loncaric's fly was also very fast. At the time it didn't seem so fast because Lavery closed a big gap after backstroke.

After a relatively poor showing at last year's NCAA's, Schneider grabs the win. Adrian 2, Feigen 4. Great race!

Ags give one right back by DQ'ing in finals of 200 FR. That's going to make it REALLY tough to get into the top 10.
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Please explain what the Ags did by sucking in the 400 MR. They put an almost entirely different group in - and swam 7 seconds slower.

Saving themselves for the morning?

I'm sorry but this is the NCAAs. You swim your guts out and see where the chips fall.
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, I'm not sure I understand it either. After DQ'ing the free relay, I would think that the whole "throw the relay for the good of the team" strategy would go out the window. Maybe they figured they weren't going to move up much, and since they were locked into the top 8, why waste the energy?

I dunno, not sure that's the way to win over recruits, but whatever.

From my understanding, relay cards must be turned in prior to the beginning of the session. The coaches probably planned to save some guys for tomorrow as they were most likely going to get 7th or 8th anyway. The DQ of that relay is unfortunate, but it looks like the AGgs are in prime position for a terrific finish. They still have their best swims in front of them. Gig 'Em Ags!
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Guess it makes a little more sense if relay cards with lineups must be turned in and locked before the session begins. Still not my favorite move in the world, but they have their reasons I'm sure, namely that tomorrow they've got a few guys with legitimate chances at A-finals, and wanted to give them the best chance.

How does it work with a guy like Snowden, who didn't otherwise qualify for an event? The rules are complicated, but do the ones about who swims in a relay that makes the cut time only apply to prelims, with Finals being basically a free-for-all?

Grant finished 8th to get them on the board and keep them in the hunt for the top 10. Hopefully we can get some Ags up into the top 8 to get a little media coverage!

the coaches were definitely resting the big dogs so they can be awesome for the duration of the weekend. the most they could have gained by throwing all of it out there was 2 points. if the guys arent top 10 this year it will be because of things other than that relay. tomorrow is a big day for them, expect great things.

Echo 5-D & dbc. Still have a long weekend ahead of us, and after the 2freeR the Ags have some work to do. They can and will do it.

09- Add an "s" after that Jay. If Nel keeps scoring in A-finals, it'll be a huge push towards a top 10 finish.

Oh come on guys. Seriously, yall need to have more faith in our coaches. doubt & cooper are right. The coaches had cards turned in before that 2fr relay got dq'd. NO ONE anticipated that jump, but what happens, happens. Nothing we could've done to change that after the fact. Our 4MR had limited upward mobility and considering that Loncaric & Makany have to double tomorrow, they made the right call. Spice- while it's nice to think you can just empty your clip and hope you hit something, taking precision shots and saving a couple bullets for later is much wiser; the big dogs are fast, but not superhuman-- they get tired too. And finally, we are most certainly NOT out of the race for a top 10 finish. Tomorrow's a big day for us. Have faith.

Oh boy, this thread is about 5 seconds away from spiraling into an old-fashioned other-sports-board, "how dare you criticize the coaches" throwdown.

In an effort to derail that, how about Cal? They looked really good on day 1. Think they have a chance at chasing down Texas?
JunctionBoys6
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think so Blastoff, they looked good, but you never know! They did look really good, how crazy was the kid from Cincy winning that 50?
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When I mentioned him as possibly the surprise of the year, I was rebuked, but he looked really, really good today. Last year, he was the pureist of the pure sprinters, anything beyond a 50 and he wasn't all that impressive. He's got a great 100 free and 100 fly this year, and I'm psyched to see how those races turn out for him.
apoColyPticus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
well you were ready to hand him the surprise of the year award when he hadn't surprised anyone. i stand by that.
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ha, fair enough. Color me surprised as hell when he won the 50. Is it a surprise yet?
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The relay explanation makes sense. But it wasn't the 800 free relay. I'm just disappointed to follow an outstanding morning swim with a "we're happy with 8th place" swim.
LeverFulcrumPivot666999
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Fine, be disappointed, but going well under the school record to beat Arizona & dropping 2.5 seconds to beat Texas is just not realistic.

That said, yes, Cal had an amazing night last night! There were a lot of awesome swims & energy coming from that team. And the Cinci upset was very very cool to watch. Hopefully today we can have a day as good as Cal did
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Tied for 8th in the medley. Have to swim-off against Michigan. That sucks. Negates any rest gained from sandbagging the race last night. The relays are very closely matched, it'd be great to sneak into that A-final.
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cal gets second in the 200 medley, Texas is third. Adrian didn't swim this morning but will tonight. The effects of the illness may be starting to set in on Feigen, as he was fast, but not as fast as you'd expect based on his swim yesterday.

In the article I mentioned where we spoke to coaches, the big concern with the fleet swimmers from all of the delay and illness was them holding the endurance for the huge number of races they have to swim this weekend. Cal has such a luxury to be able to qualify with a great lane without throwing their top relay out in prelims.

Amini and Balazs both scratched their individual events. Anyone care to shed some light on that one? Because I really don't get it.
dbcooper
How long do you want to ignore this user?
making the finals is very difficult in individual events, so sometimes it is in the best interest of the team goals to take a relay swimmer out of their race to maximize points in the relays. thats the way the entire system is set up. i am assuming that when the relay tied for 8th they decided to give amini a little extra rest so that he could BTHO michigan, which the guys did. making the A heat of that relay is exponentially more important than letting him get anywhere from 20th to 40th in the 100 breast.
texagg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
echo what dbc said (again). and, like we saw at conference, Balazs might only have one school record 200 freestyle swim in him per meet, and that fastest swim will be best used leading off the 800 tonight, as opposed to possibly squeaking out a point at 16th place. Like some ppl have said before, its all about using your best shots where you can get the most for them. Relays are, and always have been, the most important part of this teams success and NCs. Thats not to say it will always be like that, because I know that is the ultimate goal, to get where we can get individual scorers as well as high relay scorers. but this team is just not there yet.

Grant is looking to be set up nicely for tonight, those will be some valuable points (i guess all points are valuable). Gonna be interesting to see where the Medley can finish tonight. They won the swim off with almost exactly their school record time, and that would have put them 3rd this morning. the field is so close in top 8. now I know some teams didnt bring their best guys this morning, but maybe we can see a top 5 finish for some monster points from that relay.
texagg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I wouldnt be surprised if tonight on the 800 FrRelay we saw Omar instead of Boris. Somebody who knows more than me correct me if thats wrong, but it makes sense with Boris having the medley and 100fly tonight, and then the 400 FrRelay tomorrow. He could potentially win the B final with his good time in fly, and theyll need that 400 tomorrow to make top 8, and Omar is as fast (maybe faster than?) boris in a 200 free. We'll see what happens tonight tho.
Look Out Below
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree with you ag09. I would almost expect Omar on there tonight.
