I believe they were saying Oregon swept cross country and indoor track which would give them 4. I don't recall any school winning a bunch more but I could be off. So are the Aggies in second place this year?

Here is the list I posted in a thread on the football board:

A&M has 3 NC's this school year. Only UNC can tie that with a win in Baseball.

They said that the Oregon MEN were going for a "triple crown" with cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. So Oregon only has 2 - men's cross country and men's indoor track. That puts the Aggies in first place with 3. Like was mentioned before, only North Carolina will be able to match that this year. They have women's soccer and men's basketball, with an opportunity to win baseball.

Feels good to be on that board. Football aside, we're actually achieving the vision of Building Champions. We were waiting for some actual breakthroughs and for us to get 3 NCs in a year is fantastic.

well then that's great that we are at least tied for number one this year (and UNC lost their first CWS game today).

not trying to get to far ahead of myself, but does anybody know what the record for most NC's in one year is?

I'm sure it's Stanford with a bunch of titles in sports that only 10 other teams compete in.

There is no such thing as an NCAA champion in football.

Don't forget that our equestrian team also won the National Championship this year. It's not an NCAA recognized sport as of yet -- but it's worth mentioning. Further proof that almost all our our sports programs are headed in the right direction.

Did we not defend our title in bass fishing?

Wrong. There is an NCAA Football Championship. We just are not in the subdivision that competes for it.

Only women's bowling. And Nebraska has a dynasty going in that. Wish A&M would get on women's bowling to be honest. Would be fun to bring the 12th man to a bowling match and watch Bill Byrne build a world class bowling alley.

denied, obviously I was referring to our division. Thought about it as soon as I posted yesterday, but didn't care enough to edit.

Byrne has said the two sports he wants to add next are Women's Bowling and Women's Gymnastics.

No way. I want rifle teams. And men's soccer.

And I thought we were in the division that competes for the football championship.

when was this mentioned? it'd be great to add some more sports, idc what they are.

And I believe I heard that sand volleyball was going to be sanctioned by the NCAA. I sure hope A&M jumps on that.

From http://www.gostanford.com/trads/stan-trads-homeofchamp.html:

Not only has the Cardinal won an NCAA record six NCAA team championships in a single season (1996-97), but it has also won five NCAA titles in a single year on three occasions: 1991-92, '94-95 and '97-98. Cardinal teams have won four championships in a single academic year on five occasions: 1985-86, '86-87, '92-93, '93-94 and 2001-02.

So now our total is...

NCAA:
softball - 2
track - 2
M golf - 1

Plus,
softball - 1 (non-NCAA)
football - 1 (non-NCAA, 1939)
football - 1 (1919, unofficial)
equestrian - 7
archery - ?

If we use "athletic department support" as the factor determining legitimacy, then I've edited the above numbers according to the below poster.

Equestrian is sponsored by the athletic dept. and has been for 10 years. Archery was for a five year period of time but cut due to lack of varsity participation by other schools. Bass fishing has never been sponsored by athletics.

Equestrian owns seven national titles. Archery won each year they were a part of athletics.

maybe bowling, but he said last year at his state of the department address that gymnastics and wrestling where very expensive due to the high number of injuries and medical related issues with those two sports.

In case no one noticed, UNC was eliminated from the CWS last nite. A&M (an no one else) can claim to have won the most NCAA National Championships this year.
