that alludes to Phelps training for some new events this year. Since I'm too lazy to search the web, any idea what those events might be?

Off of his Bejing schedule, I'd guess the most obvious would be either of the backstroke events.
I can't see him going any more distance into the freestyles, but I'd definitely imagine he's going to try and win the 100 free ind. in some big meets, to answer some of the mainstream sports' critics who said Bolt's performance was more impressive at the Olympics because Phelps "shyed away from the 100 free, where the fastest pure swimmers are." Not that any of those guys will eat crow when Phelps wins there too. I'd like to see him train a few months for the 50 and swim it at a big meet, just to see what would happen.

Thoughts?
Maybe other 50's for SC champs?

On a non A&M swimming topic....

I read some time ago that MP said the 400IM in Beijing was his last. That alone would change his training immensely. Bowman has said MP trains mostly like a distance swimmer.

Most of the speculation I read concerns 100 free and the backstroke events. Phelps has never had front half speed so the 50 seems out of the question. Physiology studies have shown you cannot develop more fast twitch fibers than you already have - but you can lose them.

My guess is that MP wants the 100 fly WR in the worst way. He has beaten Peirsol in 200 back and should be able to take that from Lochte or Peirsol with focused training.

Just a guess but I think he goes after 100/200 free, 200IM, 100 fly, and 200 back.

I could definitely believe that Spicewood. Although, he has also said he'd never go for the 8 again. I wonder if he just meant for the Olympics, or if he meant for all meets?
He's had his day in the sunshine, and I can't imagine him dropping a relay in favor of keeping an individual event, especially when relay medals only require him to do one swim.

Trivia question of the day:
How many different events (individual and relay) has Phelps owned the WR in at some point in his career?
