Agreed. How do you hit such a huge serve, then follow it with a slice backhand?

He did play a lot better this tourney, though. Played more agressive. He seemed just a little off tonight.

there is no excuse for getting broken THREE times in the first set with the biggest serve on earth and the crowd there just begging you for a reason to get behind you and turn against djokovic. that was his chance to grab the momentum, get novak pouting, and turn it into a short match. IMO, it was over as soon as he got down 5-2 in the first.

as far as decision making, i can't think of anyone else who has been #1 in the world who is so scared, so unconfident in his strokes, and that bails out of so many big points. how many of you DIDN'T see that dropshot coming at 5 all in the breaker?? even HE knew that he was gonna miss it. if andy hits more than 3 slice backhands in a row, the point is pretty much over. granted, if he hits more than 3 backhands period, the point is over, but at least if he drives the ball he has a chance to penetrate and make something happen before it turns into a grind point.

oh well, at least i can turn my focus to fed now.

I dont completely agree with the slice comment, because he can use it at the right times. He does slice too much, though. He is scared to hit, like camden said, and I dont think anyone understands it.

By the way, I think he got broken 4 times in the first set. Too many, either way.

but that's the problem with his slice...he doesn't hit it at the right times. you should use it for defense when pulled wide, to change pace/direction, or to approach. half the time he is using it as a rally ball. no reason for that from a big guy who still moves reasonably well.

roddick was broken 5 times: 3 in the first, 1 in the second, 1 in the fourth.

Correct. If you heard Johnny Mac talk before the match, he mentioned this. Said if he used the slice a lot to start out the match, you would know he wouldnt win. Johnny Mac knows his stuff.

A guy with his serve should never slice. But then again, its almost better than his regular backhand. I just dont get how no one has told him not to approach his backhand crosscourt all the time. Roddick is not fast enough to cover that 99% of the time.

Novak's rumored choice of Leryn Franco ain't bad either. I was searching for her at the match on sunday with no luck. Luke Wilson was there, but that just doesn't even come close.

it was that drop shot that fell into the net that got me. i hope pat can help with his shot selection. connors didnt really. maybe he needs gilbert back?
bigfoot10s
How long do you want to ignore this user?
would be great to have Gilbert back, but it wont happen. Brad has moved on to bigger and better, up and coming players. I think Pat Mac is gonna be great for Roddick, and I think the Open showed that, to a point. He played a lot better this tourney than he has, but obviously not as well as he would like.

The drop shot in the tie breaker was absolutely mystifying. At least this tournament he kind of put his game back on track. I'm still sticking with Nadal to take the open.

down two sets to none to Murray, gonna need a big comeback when the rain stops

If Murray wins, it's an upset for sure but I wouldn't call it a huge upset. Murray's at number 6 and won a big tnmt a couple of weeks ago and has two wins over Djokovic this summer. I'll be pulling for R Fed no materr who he faces. This has been a great couple of weeks of tennis.

Murray has had one of his best tournaments and for sure his best grand slam these two weeks. Should be a fun matchup with him and Fed if he wins

bigfoot or should i say clueless foot. Roddick did not have a good open he beat a chilean who tanked. Roddick is a little b&i^t#c)h who goes thru coaches like a spoiled teenager.

Before the match I picked Murray to win. I'm a little less certain now, even with the 2 set lead. The delay definitely favors Nadal. Still, I can't see Murray losing 3 straight sets.

Either way, I think Fed gets his 5th straight.

Making the Quarters of a Major is a pretty good tournament. He played some tough matches and got some big wins. Gonzales is a tough opponent, and any win over a seeded player is something to be proud of. Going that far in a major is a huge improvement for Roddick

^^^ agreed. That is the most Roddick can aspire to achieve

His game is too up and down to get any farther. He would have to play too big for too many matches in a row to win a major. Mens tennis is too deep these days for him to do that and dodge that many bullets.

Great serve but the rest of his game is pretty pedestrian. Has power but he won't outsmart any opponent on the court.

And what's up with the Serbian players whining about injuries? Djokovic brought it up and now Jankovic just whined about it after the match against Serena.

Jelena Jankovic is annoying. I am SO glad Serena won. Jelena still couldn't shut up and let Serena have the spotlight for a few minutes. She RARELY dictates anything on the court. Just outlasts people and plays a million tournaments to get her high ranking. She has won ONE title this year. It was a complete joke when she was #1 in the world (for a whole week) earlier this year.

As to the original topic, Roddick definitely makes some strange choices on the court. And I agree without his huge serve, he would be a very ordinary player.

yeah, because THAT'S why she is #2 in the world. FYI, of the wta top 20, 10 of the women have played the same number or more tournaments than she has.
