This place is going to go crazy when Coach Henry wins his first of many titles.

Why is the men's program so mediocre? The team actually did better under Nelson in the Big XII then under Henry. They had six finishes in ten years higher at nationals than the best finish under Henry. In that 20th place finish 8.75 of the 13 points were scored by Fabrice Lapierre who was recruited by the previous staff. The best finish under Henry outdoors beat only the worst conference finish under Nelson.

The team finished in the top twenty more often than not. It enjoyed a much stronger reputation than the women's team. It would stand to reason that the women should have taken longer than the men to get good. It should be pointed out the Henry works with the men's sprinters and that Vince Anderson is the women's sprint coach. The men should be better.

I am not buying the facilities arguement that so many coaches use. Track did not have a locker room until about five years ago. That is pathetic on the part of A&M dating back to John David Crow and Wally Groff. The outdoor track was good enough to host the NCAA regional and USA Track and Field Junior Championship the year before Henry was hired. I am glad the women have improved so much but should we not be alarmed that the men have regressed.

It takes a bit longer to build a men's track program due to scholarship limits. They don't get as many as the women.

If I had to weigh the men taking a step back and the women taking a huge leap forward (ie, winning numerous titles) or both being 'just good', I would take the former. Fortunately, we don't have to choose that. The men will come around very soon.

I don't think there should have been any real down time for the men's program it was having success although it certainly could have done better. With the men's team you didn't have to build a reputation out of nothing, it was already somewhat successful. As for the scholarship limitations, baseball has it much worse and they have turned it around much quicker. I am disappointed with what has happened with the men's team.

On the positive side, congrats to Christina Munoz for making it to nationals. The women will return three girls on the team who have been to the NCAA meet in addition to Munoz. The will rate as one of the favorites to go to nationals out of this region and should finish top three in conference next year.

Remember baseball was a .500 conference team. They're doing well, but are far from turned around.
Also, comparing team to individual sports is apples to oranges.

The men's team was third at conference in 2004 in the year before Henry took over and returned the vast majority of the scorers from that team. That team had a poor national meet. In 2003, the team was second at conference and 11th at Nationals. The men's program was in good shape when he took over.

I am not saying that the men's team should be national champions by now or even top five. I don't think it is unreasonable to have expected in three years that we would have seen some improvement. The men's program has finished 6th, 6th and 9th at the Big XII meet and 29th, 20th and 22nd. at the NCAA meet. By far the most successful athlete that they have had on the men's side was Fabrice Lapierre and he was recruited by the old staff.

It is obvious that the women's team has made tremendous strides. My concern is that the men's team is actually losing ground in the conference and nationally and I am wondering why. I am not buying the line of it takes time to get his own recruits. Martin Smith started at Oklahoma a year after Coach Henry and their men's team was among the worst in conference when he took over. In his first year they beat us at conference despite not scoring a single point at Nationals. In his second year they won the conference championship and beat us at Nationals as well. Our men must at least contend for championships with what we are paying this staff.

Why no reports of the men's signing class?

They have a very solid class. Almost all are either sprinters or triple jumpers. The jumpers are very good. The spinters will improve our relay depth. Wish we had gotten a good hurdler or vaulter.

Good points are made regarding concerns about the absence of progress with the men's program under Henry. The comparisons with Nelson's success are very concerning.
