Early contenders for 2015's top ten prospects

With Mack Brown and Texas handing out offers to sophomores like candy and Kevin Sumlin’s Aggies playing host to plenty of highly-regarded Class of 2015 prospects over each of the next two weekends, now would be a good time to take a ridiculously early look at the state’s top ten juniors-to-be.

For now, we’re going to keep the number there because, regardless of the incredible amount of spin coming out of Austin, there are precious few prospects who stand out a sure-fire, high-end D-I prospects prior to their sixteenth birthday. Without further adieu, here’s your 2015 top ten.

  1. How good is Mack right now? If he were in the Class of 2014, he’d compete for this year’s No. 1 spot. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"How good is Mack right now? If he were in the Class of 2014, he’d compete for this year’s No. 1 spot.","Author":""}
    Gladewater DT Daylon Mack
    The 6-2, 310-pounder is going to play college football at Kyle Field or in Austin and anyone who doesn’t rank Mack at the top of any 2015 recruiting list is either looking for shock value or simply out of their right mind.

    How good is Mack right now? If he were in the Class of 2014, he’d compete for this year’s No. 1 spot. As far as sophomores go, he’s the most impressive defensive tackle prospect I’ve seen the state of Texas produce since Ty Warren.

  2. Mesquite Poteet LB Malik Jefferson
    A defensive difference-maker whose upside is as high as any current linebacker in the state not named Hoza Scott, Jefferson already holds offers from A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and, most recently, Baylor. The 6-2, 215-pounder is as close to a can’t-miss prospect as you’ll find in the Class of 2015.

  3. TexAgs {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"right","Size":"small","Caption":"","MediaItemID":18951}
    West Orange-Stark S Deionte Thompson
    Already committed to Nick Saban and Alabama, Thompson is exactly what every elite-level program is looking for at safety. The 6-3, 180-pounder is a rangy ballhawk and holds offers from ‘Bama, Baylor and Texas, with the Ags almost certain to offer when he visits College Station later this spring.

    A trusted WO-S source told me as far back as last summer that Deionte is better than former Mustang and Seattle Seahawks pro-bowler Earl Thomas and had the potential to join Thomas and Aggie great Kevin Smith atop Stark’s all-time list.

  4. Plano West RB Soso Jamabo
    The state’s top-ranked junior tailback, Jamabo possesses an excellent blend of size, speed, vision and agility. He’s a tremendous natural runner and will be one of the nation’s most heavily-recruited backs. In fact, the 6-2, 185-pounder — who ran for over 1,700 yards as a sophomore — already holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and Oklahoma. Again, the Aggies are sure to join the list whenever Jamabo visits College Station.

  5. At this time next year he'll be contending for the title of state’s top defensive back and already holds extremely early offers from regional powers A&M, Texas, OU and LSU. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"At this time next year he\u0027ll be contending for the title of state’s top defensive back and already holds extremely early offers from regional powers A&M, Texas, OU and LSU.","Author":""}
    FB Marshall DB Kendall Sheffield
    The Ags’ second sophomore offer in the 2015 race, Sheffield is a gifted athlete who could play on either side of the ball at the college level but projects as a lockdown corner. Standing at around 6-0, he’s likely to add another inch or so, which would make him a good-sized, SEC-style corner.

    At this time next year he'll be contending for the title of state’s top defensive back and already holds extremely early offers from regional powers A&M, Texas, OU and LSU.

  6. Clear Lake TE Jordan Davis
    One of just two prospects on our initial 2015 list to have already announced a commitment, Davis is currently on board with Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State Seminoles. The 6-4, 245-pounder can run and catch and is a versatile enough athlete to play tight end in either a pro-style or spread offense.

  7. TexAgs {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"right","Size":"small","Caption":"","MediaItemID":29257}
    Katy RB Rodney Anderson
    The 5-11, 185-pound tailback is a game-changer and possibly the Houston area’s most explosive 2015 offensive weapon. In two years at Katy, Anderson ran for a combined total of over 2,000 yards and 32 TDs as a freshman and sophomore and averaged over 10 yards per carry during the Tigers’ 2012 state championship season. He’ll be a nationally-recruited tailback.

  8. Sulphur Springs S Larry Pryor
    A big-play threat at receiver, Pryor is the way-too-early favorite to emerge as the state’s No. 1 prospect at the position. An explosive 5-11, 190-pounder who is plays a fast and physical brand of football. He’s a very well-rounded target.

  9. Ridge Point LB Cameron Townsend
    The Houston-area linebacker isn’t getting a lot of state top-10 run just yet, but the 6-1, 190-pounder is a fast and aggressive linebacker blessed with an impressive frame and outstanding football instincts. Texas was his first offer and I imagine he’ll hold offers from most of the SEC and Big 12 power players by the end of his junior season.

  10. FB Marshall ATH J.W. Ketchum
    Ketchum wants to play quarterback in college and that’s entirely possible. The player he reminds me of most is longtime Aggie commit and Oregon Duck wide receiver Bralon Addison. Don’t be surprised to see Ketchum lead Marshall on a deep playoff run or two before his high school career is done. Like Addison, he’s a playmaker, a field general and, most of all, a winner.
