  1. Smart, savvy guard that gets the team in order, Leader
  2. Pass first, score second type of player that will make open shots
  3. Find him in transition, pressure him on the perimeter, Attack him on offense

Offensive tendencies

Primary
The Gators like to push the ball in transition and take quick shots from behind the three point line. They have a number of guards that can go get a rebound and then start the break, making it hard for defenses to react and set up a strong defense. Watch for Florida to take a quick shots after grabbing an offensive rebound.

HALF COURT OFFENSE
When the Gators get into their half court sets, they want to set a lot of on ball screens at the top of the key to get the ball handler open and create scoring opportunities for the wings. Coach Donovan runs a number of plays with staggered screens along the baseline to get his shooters open and a handful of plays  with cross screens for the posts to get open on the block. The guards will often run a weave with handoffs that go straight into a ball screen and roll action for the posts. The Gators are not afraid to shoot when they're open, no matter where they are on the court.

Defensive tendencies

Florida will play three different defensive schemes. First, is their aggressive man-to-man defense where they extend the pressure and like to deny passes along the perimeter. Second, they will give a couple of zone looks, either a 2-3 zone or a 3-2 zone. In their zone defense, they will trap in the corner and double team anywhere in the paint. And finally, the Gators will full court press their opponents with a 2-2-1 press. They like to extend the pressure in the full court but will most often drop into their man-to-man defense.

They use the full court press to try to create turnovers and slow down their opponent. It is also used to control the tempo of the game and get their opponent flustered.

Keys to the game

  • Control the tempo of the game, execute the offense, make open shots
  • Guarding the ball screens and talking on defense
  • Contest all shots and rebound the basketball
