At times it seems the importance of special teams can be forgotten, but any close game will offer a not-so-subtle reminder of just how vital the kicking game is. A long kick return can shift momentum. Effective punting is a major factor in the all-important struggle for field position. Many games are decided by a pivotal field goal attempt in the final seconds.

Strong special teams can make up for weaknesses in other areas.
