Charean: Even if he doesn't play again, Von should be a first-ballot HOFer

Key notes from Charean Williams interview

  • I voted on the poll that ranked the top Cowboys of all-time. Roger Staubach was the easy choice at No. 1. There were so many guys to choose from because the Cowboys have so many Hall of Famers. There are so many great skill players in their history that it's hard to even make a Top 10. You pretty much just have to put the Hall of Famers on there and then fill in at the end. The full list is available online at DallasCowboys.com. There is an entire book about the 60-year history of the Dallas Cowboys out now as well.

  • The Cowboys' first game is at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and we'll get to see if it's better or worse than JerryWorld. I know that Jerry isn't ready to give up that title yet.

  • You have to like the Cowboys' skill position players. I think they'll contend for the top offense in the NFL. They'll move the ball, but I'll be interested to see if they can score more points in the red zone. I was not too fond of their red-zone play-calling last year.

  • The main concern is the Cowboys' secondary. They didn't address the safety position, and they lost their top corner in Byron Jones. They better be able to get to the quarterback or else they could be giving up big plays and doing so frequently.

  • You can't forget their running backs. I think we'll see them use Tony Pollard more than we did last year. I believe Ezekiel Elliott will carry the ball more than last year. He did not play very well last year. The running game will be used more. It'll still be interesting how much of Mike McCarthy's influence is in this offense, with Kellen Moore still calling the plays.

  • The last safety to make the Pro Bowl from the Cowboys was Roy Williams. People forget about him and go direct to Darren Woodson. It's been that long since they've had a Pro Bowl safety. I know we undervalue safeties, but you can see what a good safety does to a defense. It's why we saw Seattle go out and get good safeties. It's why we've seen Seattle and Baltimore be so good for so long. I don't know how you have a good defense without at least one good safety back there. The Cowboys have neglected the position. There are huge question marks in that secondary, and they'll need to score a lot of points to make up for it.

  • The good thing about Von Miller's injury is that he'll get to have a chance to play for a few more years, but maybe not in Denver. Unless he wants to take a hometown discount, I think his career in Denver is over. I think he would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer even if he doesn't play again. I thought he had a chance to be the Defensive Player of the Year this season. Reports said that he was playing that well in practice. They called this a freak injury. Sometimes you can't explain these things.

  • This is a year with the same system, same quarterback, and same head coach. The Aggies have all of it. Assuming they don't lose a lot of players to COVID, this is their year. They need to step up and do it. I like what I see on paper, but they have to go out and do it. Quarterback is always the key, and Kellen Mond needs to go out and play well.
