Around CFB: Playoffs hinge on midseason clash of SEC West unbeatens

History proves an undefeated season is not required to win the college football national championship.

In fact, history has often repeated itself. Indeed, four of the last five national champions had a loss on their record.

Alabama, for example, won national championships in 2011, 2012 and 2015 with a loss on its record.

Still, an undefeated season may be the only way to guarantee a place in the four-team College Football Playoff field.
