Key quotes from Jerrod Johnson interview

“The veteran combine was at the Cardinals facility and my agent had heard about it and told me I should apply to it to give me a chance to throw in front of all the teams again because I really hadn’t done that since the first combine. I had just thrown for teams that worked me out and signed me. We applied, I think there were 2000 guys that applied and they took 106 of us. Seven or Eight QBs and I feel like I threw the ball well and got a lot of good feedback, so hopefully something comes from it.”

“It was very interesting. It was more like an individual workout that teams tend to hold on a Tuesday. On Tuesday or Wednesday every week in the NFL they will bring in five or six receivers and have you run a 40 and then do 10 or 15 routes. That is essentially what it was. They just did it for every position in one day. The thought was, if we could do this every spring instead of every team having their own workouts, lets bring in all the guys that would normally go through these and bring all the teams and do it in one day.”

“I thought I threw the ball well and had some good velocity on the ball, which was my biggest thing. After the evaluation from teams was that I lacked arm strength that is something you want to show. The first time a lot of these teams saw me I was coming off my shoulder issues. So I had a lot of zip on my ball and got some good feedback, so it is just a matter of if someone is going to take a chance and bring me in.”

“I’m in a good place right now. I’m really happy with how my days are. I wake up and run and lift and get my workouts in Houston and go and get my throwing in with James Rodgers and Russell Shepherd and a group of pro guys around lunch and then go coach quarterbacks in the afternoon. It’s been status quo, it is what ive been doing the last three or four years. Working out and throwing and then coach my quarterbacks up in the afternoons.”

“As of now, I’m no longer under contract in Canada, so it is NFL or coach at this point. It is legitimate football and the fans and stuff are great, I really enjoyed it. It is just one of those things where you grow up with the dream of playing in the NFL, so as long as I keep getting calls and if I can get a workout, I’m going to keep showing up. In the meantime, I have my business in Houston and that is working out pretty well for me.”

“My business is the quarterback club of Houston and my website is theqbclub.com and we provide quarterback training for all ages. We have kids from 2nd grade all the way up to college. I do individual lessons, small groups and large camps. I do the fundamentals and what I really stress is the scheme. If all my kids, by the time they step on a college campus, can read coverages and defenses and understand rhythm and timing and watching film and stuff, the learning curve will be taken away and they will have a lot more success. There is a market for it and people ask me all the time what I do as far as running camps and I tell them that it is more like a golf lesson than a football lesson because there are a lot of moving parts.”

“I like Kyle Allen’s physical skill set. He is a big, strong, athletic kid with a live arm and is an accurate passer. The thing I’ve seen from afar watching videos is his leadership. That is the one thing with Kyler (Murray) coming in where he can put himself ahead a little bit. It has to be his team and if those guys believe in him they will fight for him."

“The quarterback battle is going to be fun for y’all and fun to cover. It is a good problem to have to have two quality quarterbacks and it is only going to help the play of the team. Whoever does win the job, the guys will just respect him more, because he went in and competed his tail off everyday against a tough opponent. Whoever wins, whether it is Kyler or Kyle, the team will respect him more because it wasn’t given to him or handed to him.”
