#6 - Cam Clear - TE - Sr.

Overall Thoughts:
  • Ranked #22 in 30 In 30 rankings in 2013.
  • Physical specimen who has the look of an NFL tight end that just needs to turn talent into production.
  • Caught just 4 passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in 2013. Was that more due to Clarence McKinney calling the plays and personnel packages and Clear not being very involved? Will that change now that Jake Spavital is at the controls?.
  • Great blocker with soft hands that can get beyond short and intermediate zones and can run and catch ball downfield.
  • Figures to be actively involved in the passing game as a safety valve and chain mover for a young quarterback.
  • Hope to see him shine brightest in the red zone as a big target in scoring opportunities.
  • Gigantic human being who is built like an athletic tackle but moves like a pass-catching tight end.
  • Listed at 6-6, 270 and runs like a deer.
  • Is versatile; a good blocker that can help A&M in the backfield and off-tackle.
  • Can be split out or can line up at traditional tight end or can be used like a fullback/H-back.
  • He is what SEC football players are supposed to look like. An imposing presence that now just has to go make plays.
  • Showed signs of "getting it" during bowl game which could be a factor of Spavital running the offense.
  • Highly committed in the weight room and has drawn rave reviews from coaches for his work ethic.
Projection:
  • Only true tight end on the roster; Ricky Seals-Jones and Brandon Alexander are getting a look.
  • Could be a valuable piece to the A&M offense in 2014, especially with a need for big target to help out a young QB.
  • A&M will likely commit to running the football moreand Clear is a very important part of the running game when blocking from TE or H-back spot.

Relevant quotes from the spring

Jeff Banks on Clear...
“He’s a great blocker. He has the ability to be a great receiver. He got a lot of experience from last year. It will be hard to say that there is a better prospect for the NFL than a guy like him from a size, speed and strength standpoint. He’s consistent in everything he does, so it’s not a work ethic thing. I think it’s really, as a tight end, it’s just got to fit positionally as we are calling your number. We are not in a tight end-based offense necessarily, but being able to flex him out and keep him attached ... I think in the bowl game alone, I think Coach Spavital showed us that we are going to be able to use him several different ways that maybe we hadn’t in the past. We did it in the spring.”

Banks on how Clear will be used this season...
“Clemson was a place that we visited with. We saw how they run it. They use a bigger guy, like a tight end/H-back. We got a lot of ways to use him closer to the line of scrimmage and on the ball, to help get him open and get us numbers in the run game. We focused on that, primarily, for Cam Clear. We saw that if he got hurt, we may not have that other guy that can move around, get vertical and catch the football in the open field against secondaries in the SEC."

Fan vote notes:
